Default Sex and the City limited series revival officially a go at HBO Max

https://tvline.com/2021/01/10/sex-an...essica-parker/

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon -- but not Kim Cattrall -- will reprise their respective roles as Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda for the 10-episode limited series, which will be subtitled And Just Like That... HBO Max is describing the revival as "a new chapter." "I couldn’t help but wonder... where are they now?" Sarah Jessica Parker wrote on Instagram this afternoon, accompanied by a teaser. Davis and Nixon tweeted confirmation of their involvement. The limited series, which will be helmed by longtime Sex and the City showrunner Michael Patrick King, "will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s," according to HBO Max's official description. Page Six first reported news of the revival shortly before Christmas. Cattrall will not be involved, but she has previously said she'd like to see Samantha Jones be re-cast with a non-white actress.

Sarah Jessica Parker: We'll miss Kim Cattrall on HBO Max's Sex and the City limited series revival

“Happy to see you back but will miss Kim/Samantha,” one commenter wrote on Parker's Instagram post announcing the revival. Parker replied: “We will too. We loved her so. X”

Sex and the City revival stars to each make more than $1 million per episode

Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis will not only star in the HBO Max limited series revival, but they're also serving as executive producers.

Kim Cattrall reacts to the Sex and the City revival news via a Twitter "like"

Cattrall liked a tweet that read: “I absolutely love Sex and the City and whilst I am saddened that Samantha will not return, I applaud doing what is best for you and think this is (a) great example of putting yourself first. Well done @KimCattrall."

Why the Sex and the City revival will be on HBO Max, not HBO

HBO Max is following Disney+'s strategy of using well-known intellectual property to bolster its streaming service. "WarnerMedia is tasked with converting HBO subscribers to its streaming service, which costs the same as the linear channel but offers a vast library of film (all things DC and Warner Bros.) and TV titles (Friends, Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos)," explains The Hollywood Reporter's Lesley Goldberg. "The conglomerate also must appeal to new subscribers, which is where originals come in. While Sex and the City has been off the air for more than a decade, new — and younger — audiences have found the series on syndication on basic cable networks like TBS and E! (Much in the same way new generations discovered Friends and The Office in Netflix.) With a pair of feature films also part of its larger franchise, Sex and the City now has the kind of broad and mainstream audience that is appealing to an upstart streaming service like HBO Max. As one source familiar with the deal tells THR, 'Right now, Max is looking for attention-getting things.' (See Wonder Woman 1984 and Warners' entire 2021 film slate, for example.)"

Hopefully, the Sex and the City revival will get that Carrie Bradshaw's "bad" outfits were part of the show's appeal

"Carrie’s messiness, along with her charming mix of high fashion and complete chaos, was the appeal of the series, rather than an element we watched around to enjoy the redeeming qualities of an admittedly flawed show," says Emily Alford. "And Carrie’s often mismatched designer outfits, artfully styled by Patricia Fields, encapsulate the debate around Sex and the City: Were they genius or tacky? Artifacts thrown together in discordant worship of pointless luxury or artistic commentary on the silliness of excess? Nearly all of the outfits that are commonly understood to be Carrie’s borderline psychotic wardrobe fails come in instances where we most see her struggling with the bridge between who she is and who she’d like to be. The outfits, like the show rebooting nearly two and a half decades later, aren’t good or bad. They’re good and bad, just like Carrie and, ultimately, Sex and the City always were."
