Default Friends Theory: Gunther Reserved Central Perk's Couch Every Day For Rachel

https://screenrant.com/friends-theor...served-rachel/

Quote:
Gunther's crush on Rachel in Friends could have motivated him to reserve Central Perk's couch for her gang every day. Running for 10 seasons, the show revolved around six friends in their early 20s navigating their way in New York. The iconic sitcom remains as popular as ever 16 years after it wrapped up in 2004.

While Friends mainly focused on main characters Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, and Ross, the series also had a string of notable supporting characters over the years. There were the characters' varying love interests, such as Janice having a big impact not only on Chandler but, briefly, even on Ross. There was also Joey's eclectic talent manager, Estelle, who was featured sporadically during the sitcom's decade-run on air. But arguably, no minor character appeared as regularly as Gunther, the manager of Central Perk and Rachel's most devoted (but unrequited) admirer.

Not much is known about Gunther's personal life, which is part of what made his character great. He was a retired actor having played a character named Bryce in All My Children but Bryce was killed in an avalanche, effectively ending Gunther's career in showbusiness and leading him to his gig at Central Perk. Despite this, Gunter was a fixture in Friends, even getting invited to some of the gang's parties, like Rachel's birthday party and Phoebe's wedding, even Ross's bachelor party. While he was mostly a background character, however, Gunther may have secretly played an important part in the friends' day-to-day lives in New York.

The Central Perk Couch Was Always A Sticking Point

Friends isn't really known for realistically depicting what life looks like for a typical 20-something New Yorker. Over the years, the show has been criticized for selling a rose-colored image of what it actually is to live in the most expensive and competitive cities in the world. Monica and Rachel's massive apartment has been a favorite topic of discussion for quite a while now, especially since New York rent is notoriously high. Each one of the friends dealt with heartbreak and career struggles, but for the sake of comedy, their issues were often watered down, and we rarely ever saw them at their day jobs. Friends' questionable aspects trickled down to its most mundane parts like their regular visitations to Central Perk. Aside from the idea that they seemed to have too much free time to just lounge at the cafe, there's also the argument that it's highly unlikely that they always got the couch — which was the establishment's best seat.

Friends Secretly Showed How The Couch Was Always Free

It's not like Friends' Central Perk was a struggling business. The cafe was typically bustling with people — either staying in for a snack or buying something on the go. During Rachel's waitressing days, only a handful of their pastries were left at the end of the day, so that means that they're almost always sold out on their daily products. This makes it more improbable that the lead characters would always get the couch all to themselves. While there were a few times it was occupied when the friends walked in, particularly one memorable time Ross and Chandler ran into bullies who took it just for the sake of hassling them, it's almost always free. They usually didn't even have to share it with other patrons, making this all the more unlikely considering that seating a group of six is significantly more difficult in busy spots like Central Perk. Unlike other controversial elements of Friends, however, the sitcom actually subtly explained how the titular characters always scored the couch. In several episodes of the show, a "RESERVED" sign can be seen on the coffee table in front of the couch. This effectively kept other customers from taking it – and it was likely Gunther's doing.

Gunther Was Always In Love With Rachel

Gunther had been a cast member on Friends since its debut year; his first appearance was in the season 1, episode 2 titled "The One With The Sonogram At The End." It wasn't until season 3, however, that it was revealed that he had a crush on Rachel, often fantasizing about eventually marrying her. At first, Gunther's thoughts were only shared through voiceover narration, which meant no one else knew he had been pining for her. Over the years, however, he became more brazen with his feelings as he started to express them openly, but in humorous, roundabout ways instead of directly to Rachel. He was often frustrated with the other men she dated, particularly Ross, as Ross was someone he saw almost every day since the gang usually hung out at Central Perk, holding the same disdain for Joey during season 8 after the sitcom paired him with Rachel. Despite admiring Rachel for so long, Gunther only came clean about his feelings in the final season of the show, upon learning that Rachel Greene had decided to move to Paris because of a new job offer. As expected, the admiration was unrequited, with Rachel politely saying that while she's flattered, she didn't feel the same way for him.

Gunther Saved The Couch For Rachel's Friends Every Day

Knowing Gunther's crush on Rachel, and that he tended to express it in oblique and indirect ways, it's likely he was the one who had saved Central Perk's couch for her and her friends every day. In Friends season 3, he accidentally revealed that one of the perks of his job at the café was the chance to stare at Rachel all day. It's uncertain if he had been harboring secret feelings for Rachel back when she was still waitressing at Central Perk, but it's worth noting that it was also in the middle of season 3 when she quit her service job to pursue a career in fashion.

Given this, it makes total sense that Gunther would be inclined to keep the couch reserved for her friends in an effort to see more of her even after she left Central Perk and to secretly please her. It didn't guarantee she'd hang out at the coffee shop with her friends, especially those who didn't have the usual 9-5 working hours like Joey and Phoebe. But the Friends couch at Central Perk always being there for them significantly increased the chances of Rachel dropping by knowing how tightly-knit the group was.
