Default CBS Sports' Jim Nantz reportedly wants his new contract to pay him "Tony Romo money"

https://nypost.com/2020/11/18/jim-na...drama-looming/

The longtime CBS Sports announcer's contract paying him $6.5 million a year is up next summer. The New York Post's Andrew Marchand reports Nantz wants his salary to top Romo's new salary that pays him $17.5 million a year. While Romo only works the football season, Nantz calls the NFL, the Final Four and golf, including The Masters. “In the last 30 years, Jim Nantz has become the face and voice of CBS Sports,” said Nantz's agent. Marchand also reports that one of the reasons why Romo was paid roughly $1 million to not work last week while Nantz called The Masters was because "Nantz is protective of his relationship with Romo." On Fox, when lead broadcaster Joe Buck calls the World Series, his NFL partner Troy Aikman is paired with another play-by-play broadcaster. But Nantz apparently doesn't want Romo to develop chemistry with somebody else.

All this makes me think that CBS Sports employs a lot of overpaid talent. $17.5M for a football analyst is only moderately sillier than paying Jim Nantz $6.5M. Having a "face of the sports division" can make sense but isn't strictly necessary. Nantz is non-controversial, but he doesn't bring any special expertise or welcoming presence to the sports he covers, so IMO he's lucky to make his salary level. CBS would've been better off keeping Brent Musberger or promoting Dick Enberg to that role for all those years. And Nantz keeping Romo off TV so he doesn't become comfortable with other announcers is as pathetically insecure as all the post-Carson talk show hosts who forced the show makers to play reruns instead of using guest hosts who could train to become their competition.

Jim Nantz is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE as a football play-by-play commentator. Romo is great, Nantz is clueless. Stick to golf Jim!
