Question If the Golden Girls were set in current times, how would the show be different?

What themes and messages would the show take on in 2020, and how would it, a current version of The Golden Girls be viewed in the decades to come?

Well, I have no doubt they would be on the right side of addressing climate change, racial discrimination, and proponents of women's rights. They were socially conscious even back in their day, so "Get Out the Vote" messages would definitely be on their agenda.

I imagine that they'd address LGBTQIA rights, Black Lives Matter, Women's Rights, sexual freedom after 70, etc.

Basically it would be another Hot In Cleveland.

It would be terrible because Susan Harris wouldn't be able to restrain herself from injecting her politics into the show.

All of them would be carrying cells (with Sophia and Blanche likely surfing the 'Net) instead of relying on wall phones or cordless phones and Rose telling St. Olaf stories for their news!

Take your right-wing political nastiness elsewhere, dear. We're here to have fun.

Something that I just found on Reddit:
  • Julianne Moore as Blanche
  • Patricia Clarkson as Rose
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Sophia
  • Meryl Streep as Dorothy

Totally agree here. Designing Women was particularly obnoxious in this respect when Bill Clinton was running for president.
"Hot in Cleveland" is a funny show and not overbearing in any respect when it comes to issues, etc., but a modern-day Golden Girls probably would be. I think it's best to leave well enough alone with a legendary show like this.

It would not be as good as the original.

1. They would half ass it.

-They'd either not use a laugh track if they chose not to (But I feel TV is going in that direction more and more now)...no studio audience anymore....

-They'd not have a theme song, just a stupid title card, or they wouldn't even have more than a few second jingle. The same crap they did with Punky Brewster...Like they'd only use the last line of the theme song with those last few notes to list the show and its creator.

2. More focus on sex. Much more. The women having a lot more of it. Dorothy experimenting with women. Let's face it, I'm sure Hollywood writers at the time of the show had ideas of her being with a woman at some point. One of my professors even wrote a spec script on her, and it was described as very masculine...this writer was a big one in the 1980s, too. Today, you'd at least get Dorothy having interest in women or at least women being interested in her and her reactions. Maybe her ways of being masculine, butch, et. Maybe she'd be more that way in a current version. Dorothy in the original came off as having some masculine traits. She was loud, assertive, didn't take any bull, but she was a lady most of the time, and she strived to find love again with a man, even though she was mostly single. If they re-made this, she'd probably be more complex than Blanche. Maybe Blanche would even have some encounters with women, too...

3. More swears. The girls wouldn't be afraid to use the word bitch at times, or it would be on a streaming service where anything goes.

4. More fights. Catfights. Hitting, punching, more stuff like that being physical. The girls wouldn't be all kind to one another. They'd have times where they'd be physical and fight as roomates, much worse than they did on the original. I could see Dorothy catfighting or fighting with Rose and Blanch and Blance and Rose catfightig. Sophia only catfighting with other old women around her age.

5. Technology. All cell phones. Laptops. Ipads. Sophia wanting the latest ones. In the original she wanted a Big Screen TV at times. Nowadays, everyone has at least one of those.
