"Perry Mason" Renewed for Season 2 at HBO

"Perry Mason" is coming back for a second season at HBO. The network said that the drama, which stars Matthew Rhys, was its most-watched series premiere in nearly two years with the premiere episode being seen by 8M viewers.

The first season of the eight-part drama launched on June 21st.



“It has been an exciting journey to work with the immensely talented team behind Perry Mason,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming.

“Viewers have relished being transported back in time to 1930’s Los Angeles each week, and we are thrilled to welcome the show back for a second season.”

Perry Mason treated its entire first season as a premise pilot

"Very little of what happens in the final hour is dramatically satisfying," says Alan Sepinwall of Sunday's season finale of HBO's Perry Mason reboot. He adds: "Despite the fine performances and sumptuous period photography, Season One is much clearer on what it doesn’t want to be than on what it does. There’s a recent trend in TV — one that started with Netflix, but has spread to the other streamers and eventually to cable outfits like HBO — to treat your entire first season as a premise pilot, explaining in detail how these characters come together to do whatever it is they do. This ignores that the great majority of premise pilots are clunky and more trouble than they’re worth, and that what works best is to just get as quickly as possible to telling stories with that premise. Elongating the process — and using a court case that probably could have been resolved within a couple of episodes, if that — only makes things more frustrating."

How does HBO's remake of Perry Mason compare to the original version? Mom likes the original Perry Mason and she didn't know that HBO remade it. Would Mom like this version of Perry Mason too?

The HBO version is much more "adult", so if you go in expecting to see the Raymond Burr series then you would be disappointed.

It takes place during the 1930's in Los Angeles before he became a criminal defense attorney and he works as a sleazy PI.
