NBC announced that Thompson's Saturday Night Live co-star Redd and Johnson are joining his NBC comedy, which is now titled Kenan instead of The Kenan Show. Thompson and Redd are expected to continue working on SNL. Johnson replaces Garcia, who played Thompson's father-in-law in the original pilot. Redd will play the newly created character of Kenan's brother Gary. Thompson's wife role has also been recast, with Single Parents alum Kimrie Lewis taking over for Punam Patel. The only cast members returning from the original pilot are the actors who play Thompson's kids. Also coming aboard is Happy Endings creator David Caspe, who will serve as showrunner. Meanwhile, Chris Rock, who directed the first pilot, is too busy to direct the second.

Kenan Thompson: Chris Redd and I have only had to juggle filming Kenan and SNL for one week so far

Thompson and Redd film their NBC comedy in Los Angeles, while also starring on Saturday Night Live in New York City. “We’ll see how exhausting it gets when it has to become a repeat kind of a thing but we did it for the Christmas show and me and Chris went out there on Friday and showed up at rehearsal that night and ended up doing the show and then we had three weeks off before we had to be on another job," Thompson tells Deadline. "It wasn’t that stressful but we’ll see how that turns around when it’s only one day in between, but I’ll be rushing back to my new family so I won’t be overly exhaustive because we’ll hold each other up.” ALSO: Watch Kenan's official trailer.
