“I hope that it’s sort of nice for people to see human beings going through something and yet finding hope and humor and love,” Azaria said of his IFC series, which closed out four seasons on Wednesday. “Our times were kind of crazy and tough even before this, and that the show was certainly a response to that. And the message was, and is, ‘We can all get through this as long as we have each other.’ Joel Church-Cooper, our head writer, he manages to to make shows that are truly emotional like that without being sentimental. I don’t know how he does it, but he does a great job of it.” Azaria adds: “For the last bunch of years, I’ve always been trying to make something this good and real and funny, and it’s just hard. I think some of the success of how well Brockmire came out, in my opinion, came out of the ashes of the old ‘To make the omelet, you gotta break the egg.’ I learned a lot from my past mistakes, both creatively and logistically. The most important thing I learned, at the top of that list, is: connect with a writer that you trust, and let them do their thing. Every time I tried to create something, it hasn’t gone well. The Simpsons star told Conan O'Brien that he got his vocal cords insured after straining them one too many times. “My voice blows out rather easily, so I have to watch it,” he said in his Conan interview. “I was having a rough time in my life, and I got into a screaming match with someone. I totally blew out my voice, and it didn’t come back for almost two weeks. I scared myself so bad that I got my vocal cords insured."
