Default In Living Color shook up TV sketch comedy 30 years ago today

https://twitter.com/TheUndefeated/st...09790918070277

Keenen Ivory Wayans' groundbreaking Fox sketch comedy show debuted on April 15, 1990, airing for five seasons through May 19, 1994. "Happy 30th to the funniest sketch ever #inlivingcolor. I remember being on the set as my brothers and sister filmed the pilot," Marlon Wayans wrote on Instagram. "All i could think was 'man the sh*t is HILARIOUS'! It still holds up 30 years later. So proud to be a part of history. @keenenivorywayans is a brilliant visionary and teacher, @damonkwayans a beast and a comedic genius and my big sister Kim was magically talented. And that cast.... one of the best to ever do it! All stars. Blessed to be a part of that institution... the world needs it." As The Daily Show's Roy Wood Jr. points out, In Living Color was "A show so funny, the NFL created the Super Bowl Halftime Show to compete with the sketches they did live during halftime. Respect the GOATS."

‘In Living Color’ To Hit The Big Screen, With Cast Reunited 25 Years After Finale

The pilot episode of the popular ’90s sketch comedy series will be screened at the 18th annual Tribeca Film Festival.

The forthcoming 18th annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York City will feature a screening of the pilot episode of the popular 1990s sketch comedy series “In Living Color.”

The festival, which will take place from April 24 to May 5, will for the first time celebrate anniversaries and milestones of iconic television shows as part of its Tribeca TV program, the festival said. “In Living Color” aired its final episode in 1994.

“The Simpsons,” which will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its first stand-alone episode next December, will also be recognized at the film festival for its influence on television.

The “In Living Color” pilot is slated to screen in a theater on April 27, followed by a conversation with members of the cast, including the show’s creator Keenen Ivory Wayans and co-stars Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans, Tommy Davidson, David Alan Grier and Rosie Perez, a press release stated.

“Twenty-five years after its finale, the cast and creator of the groundbreaking sketch comedy show ‘In Living Color’ will reunite to reflect on the Emmy Award-winning show that upended the landscape of television comedy and launched the careers of some of the greatest entertainers of our time,” the announcement read.

Monday on Twitter, Davidson teased the news of the reunion with a throwback photo that also featured other cast members, including Jim Carrey, Kim Coles and Kelly Coffield Park. “Guess who’s getting together 4 @Tribeca FF 2019?” he wrote. “That’s right #InLivingColor gettin’ 2gether 4 reunion”

The series also featured a troupe of dancers called the Fly Girls, which included at times Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Ann Inaba and Deidre Lang.

Asked last year about the possibility of a revival of “In Living Color,” Carrey told ET, “That show needs to exist. ... I’d love to see it reconstitute itself in another form.”

People only seem to bring up In Living Color now when they want to discuss the early years of Jim Carrey. Now granted, Values Dissonance has pretty much affected other stuff like the Bolt 45 commercial, Handi-Man, and Men On Film (though "hated it!" has become a minor meme), but you'd think that it would have had more influence.

American sketch comedy television series In Living Color was the definition of an overnight success. Premiering on Fox on April 15, 1990, the show immediately became a pop culture phenomenon when more than 22 million people watched that first episode. The fact that a predominantly Black and entirely irreverent variety show would propel the network to new heights was ironic given that most Black comedies of the time were respectable, family-friendly efforts. In Living Color tapped into the burgeoning hip-hop culture and delivered laughs with edgy sketches that made Saturday Night Live look outdated in comparison. The star status of the show would only last for so long though. By season three, a negative snowball effect took over starting with creator and star Keenen Ivory Wayans getting tired of the network's meddling and censorship efforts. By the end of season four, the Wayans family was no longer involved, the quality suffered, and the show ended after five seasons on May 19, 1994.
