According to The A.V. Club, it wasn't viewer outrage that got the scene pulled. An anonymous former producer says it was pulled due to the suicide prevention work of Caryn Zucker, who at the time was married to then-NBC president and CEO Jeff Zucker. After a call with producers and representatives from the network, “the episode was re-cut and re-delivered, with the original HD-SR delivery masters collected back from NBC and thrown into deep storage," says the producer.
