MacLachlan has had prior TV comedy experience, having recurred on How I Met Your Mother, Sex and the City and Portlandia. In fact, it was the How I Met Your Mother connection that drew him to the CBS sitcom. (Both have veteran TV director Pamela Fryman in com mon.) He also wanted to work with Patricia Heaton. “I follow people, and then I follow my gut reaction to the people,” he says. “I thought, ‘This might be fun. Let’s see what happens.’”
