"Walt Disney Company has suggested the days of letting streaming-video titans run free in TV commercial breaks may be over," according to Variety, confirming a Wall Street Journal report. "The company, which will launch its widely-anticipated streaming service next month, has told Netflix it will not run its commercials on entertainment networks like ABC, Freeform and FX, according to a person familiar with the matter. Disney will still take Netflix ads on ESPN, this person said. And Disney is telling most streamers that it will not run their commercials unless the company has a broader relationship with Disney that could encompass not just advertising, but such things as distribution or programming, this person added." ALSO: Disney+ may not come to Fire TV over Disney-Amazon feud. Why Disney is banning Netflix from advertising on ABC, Freeform and FX -- and not Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and HBO Max Disney originally considered banning all streaming rivals to Disney+. But according to Josef Adalian, "Disney’s policy has evolved: Now, only Netflix is banned. A person familiar with Disney’s thinking says the reason Amazon, Apple, and other media companies with streaming platforms are still welcomed as advertisers is because those companies have other relationships with Disney, including ways for Disney to advertise with them. Apple, for example, sells advertising on its Apple News platform, while Amazon has a huge ad division. Netflix quite famously does not do advertising. As a result, Disney decided it no longer wanted to help Netflix in its bid to attract more subscribers and get its current subscribers to watch more Netflix." |
