mixed-ish - Tuesdays at 9:00PM ET/PT on ABC
Premieres Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at 9:00PM ET/PT The black-ish franchise expands with its newest spinoff mixed-ish, coming to ABC this Tuesday. Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the '80s, and the dilemmas they face to acclimate in the suburbs while staying true to themselves. Bow's parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they're perceived as neither black nor white. This family's experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one’s own identity when the rest of the world can't decide where you belong. Mixed-ish has a great cast, but it has yet to figure out how to fit them together in a satisfying way
"Tika Sumpter is radiant as Rainbow’s mother, Alicia, but it’s hard to buy into the character given how quickly she goes from wanting her children and family to be 'above race' to realizing how impossible that is," says Angelica Jade Bastién of ABC's Black-ish prequel spinoff. "Sumpter and Mark-Paul Gosselaar, as the family’s idealistic patriarch, Paul, share flashes of easygoing charm, but the chemistry between them hasn’t gelled. Worse yet is Gary Cole, an actor I typically like but who is saddled here with playing a blunt caricature of a Republican who says lines like 'This is why I don’t do cocaine. I am cocaine.' That the character has any impact at all is thanks to Cole’s skills as a comedic performer. But like so much about the premiere — from its too-clean set design to its too-clean outlook on race — it only half works, at best." ALSO:

I saw the pilot and thought it wasn't that bad. I have to admit that I hate Black-ish though. The only reason I gave this show a shot is because of Mark being in it. I tend to give anything he's in at least one shot.
