Why was Claire so absolutely monstrous to Vanessa - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I mean, Vanessa was perhaps the only relatively normal and average kid in the house. But if Theo and Denise were screw-ups in various ways, Sondra was a disappointment, and Rudy went from being adorable, cute little kid to hell on wheels, Vanessa stayed normal, and they still seemed to absolutely hate her for it. For example, wasn't there a later episode where Claire called Vanessa "that little WENCH" when she found out Vanessa had asked Cliff permission to go to a party Claire didn't want her to go to?

As the seasons went on, I grew to loathe the sanctimonious Clair. How anyone could stand to be around her, I’ll never know. I suspect that in a real-life situation, her grown children would have as little to do with her as possible.
