Default CBS will likely stick with Love Island next summer despite disappointing ratings

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/li...atings-1227370

Love Island currently ranks 19th of the 23 unscripted shows airing on the Big Four networks this summer. Still, CBS remains behind the reality show and is trying to find any sign of growth, including focusing on young women who watch Love Island via streaming. "You know our regular numbers, and do we wish (Love Island's) were a little higher? Sure we do," CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl tells The Hollywood Reporter. "But we never underestimated how hard it was going to be to speak to an audience that, frankly, doesn't watch CBS on a regular basis. I think we feel like we're making progress in that area, and we'll see over this next week and a half how well we do."

Man I hate those type of shows. I wish they'd take 2/3 of them off the air. There would still be plenty for people to watch, that actually do like them.

CBS Renews Dating Reality Series "Love Island" for Second Season – TCA
by Peter White
August 1, 2019

CBS has handed dating reality series "Love Island" a second season. Contestants will return to the Love Island villa, situated in Fiji, for another run next summer.

The announcement was made during the TCA summer press tour by CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl and Thom Sherman, Senior Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Entertainment

The passion of Love Island’s audience is incredible,” said Kahl. “The intensity of their social media engagement has created tremendous enthusiasm for the series here at the Network. We love the show’s creative execution and can’t wait for next season.

Love Island has struggled because it's boring with a bad batch of contestants

"Reality TV has to make choices so viewers don’t have to — and I’m not talking about the somewhat surprising decision to renew Love Island for Season 2, which CBS announced Thursday morning," says Ben Travers. "Decisions have to be made within the series itself: Producers have to stir the pot, contestants have to be pushed to reveal intimate emotions, and the series itself has to choose which moments add up to the most enticing narrative. It’s not that this version is bad; plenty of reality TV is supposed to be bad. But Love Island is boring." Travers adds: "With all of these opportunities for romantic frisson, it’s remarkable how unexciting Love Island has turned out to be… until you look beyond the set-up and examine the structure. Sure, reality TV can thrive with a simple premise — Big Brother and The Real World prove this pretty well — but only if it’s got the right contestants being given enough motivation."

CBS' bet on Love Island paid off since it delivered new, younger viewers to the network

Love Island may have not been a ratings success, but its younger viewers are arguably more valuable to the network than those who'd watch NCIS reruns instead, according to Josef Adalian. "Reaching non-traditional CBS viewers is no small thing, particularly in the weeks leading up the fall season when broadcast networks charge the most for advertising and launch the bulk of their new shows," says Adalian. "Love Island lets CBS sell freshman series such as The Unicorn and Evil to potential viewers who’d otherwise might not even know these shows existed. It’s not a game-changer, but in the age of Too Much TV, even the slightest advantage helps." Adalian argues that Love Island was also a success for elevating the reality TV genre.
