TV "Will & Grace" Reboot to End with Upcoming 2020 Season

"Will & Grace" Reboot to End with Upcoming 2020 Season on NBC
by Denise Petski
July 25, 2019

"Will & Grace" is coming to an end. After an historic 11-season, 246-episode run, the series will end with the upcoming season (the reboot’s third and 11th overall) in 2020.

When NBC had the opportunity to reconnect this amazing cast and creative team, we jumped at the chance,” said George Cheeks and Paul Telegdy, Co-Chairmen, NBC Entertainment.

The impact and legacy of ‘Will & Grace’ simply can’t be overstated, both as a true game-changer in the portrayal of the LGBTQ community and as one of the finest comedies in television history. A huge thank you to Max, David, Jimmy and a cast that is second to none for their brilliance over an incredible run.

A start date on the upcoming and final season will be announced at a later date.

I wonder what the future holds for reboots, the ratings on Will and Grace really fell apart last year, the show tied for 45th place in the 18-49 demo, while placing 75th overall. As we all know Murphy Brown tanked, The Connors did OK at 17 (18-49) and 30 overall, but the numbers were down significantly from season 1, how will the numbers hold up in season 3. There may be more of a future relaunching a series (updated version of an old series with a completely new cast), rather than rebooting (bringing back the old cast and doing new episodes).

I'd think a relaunch is riskier than a reboot.

Will & Grace's final season is bringing on Patton Oswalt, Ali Wentworth and Chris Parnell

Oswalt will play the brother of Karen Walker's unseen ex-husband Stanley, while Parnell and Wentworth will each be playing doctors.

Debra Messing and Megan Mullally hint a cast feud caused the show's end as they UNFOLLOW each other

Quote:
Will & Grace stars Debra Messing and Megan Mullally have hinted a cast feud could be responsible for the show being cancelled at the end of its 11th season.

The actresses - who play Grace Adler and Karen Walker on the rebooted NBC sitcom - stirred suspicion among fans after they unfollowed each another on Instagram.

Megan, 60, later posted cryptic messages about 'people who aren't good for you'.

The co-stars were notably missing from each other's list of followers on Tuesday, after Megan penned a now-deleted Instagram story about feeling 'the best' now she's lost her 'attachment to somebody'.

Megan wrote: 'One of the best feelings is finally losing your attachment to somebody who isn't good for you!'

In addition, she posted: 'Don't ask people for directions if they've never been where you're going!'

Debra, meanwhile, uploaded a post a few weeks ago, urging fans to vote for Will & Grace for the Emmys, but failed to tag Megan.

She tagged everyone in the post - including the series' director James Burrows and co-creator Max Mutchnick - except the actress.

Those that noticed took to Instagram and Twitter to share their concerns over the matter.

One wrote: 'I am seriously struggling to understand the drama that has ensued between the W&G cast members over the last few days. As much as I'm eager to know what happened, I'm trying to refrain from speculation.

'I don't want to jump to conclusions about their friendship (especially since very little information is public). I'm sure we'll all get the answers that we seek eventually. I just hope they are all okay.'

Another tweeted: 'Debra Messing and Megan Mullally are no longer friends - my life is falling apart!'

A third posted: 'Megan Mullally and Debra Messing unfollowing each other... I finally know what it feels like to be a child of divorce.'

Another penned: 'Okay so do we know what happened with Debra Messing and Megan Mullally or no?'

'So people are saying that Megan Mullally and Debra Messing aren't friends anymore and I've never been sadder in my whole life!' a fifth person wrote.

The show ran originally until 2006 for eight seasons before coming to a close; but it was rebooted in 2017 after the cast reunited to film a promotional short for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in 2016.

This was so well-received, NBC re-commissioned the sitcom for a comeback, returning for a ninth season in 2017.

Two further seasons were commissioned following the success of this, but it was announced last month that the 11th season would be the last.

Fans are now concerned that Debra and Megan's fall out is the reason.

When the principal cast - which also includes Eric McCormack as Will Truman and Sean Hayes as Jack McFarland - returned to screens in 2017, they revealed to fans that they hadn't socialised as a quartet since the series came to a close in 2006, but that they had always been friends.

They gushed about reuniting for the election short - which was put out online only - claiming that their chemistry resurfaced as soon as they were back together.

This was evident in the finished video, leading to NBC's decision to reboot.

"Another tweeted: 'Debra Messing and Megan Mullally are no longer friends - my life is falling apart!'"

It sounds like the writer of this comment may need to turn off the TV and get a life.

"So people are saying that Megan Mullally and Debra Messing aren't friends anymore and I've never been sadder in my whole life!' a fifth person wrote."

If this is saddest someone ever has been then they have led a charmed life.

Grace is pregnant in Will & Grace's final season premiere trailer

Shortly after announcing that Will & Grace's final season will premiere on Oct. 24, instead of early 2020, NBC has released the first trailer for Season 11.

Gee, I wonder if there'll be a second series finale for Will & Grace this time around, or will that three-year "special attraction" run will just end with a regular episode?

I thought the cast and crew of W&G were going to keep producing new episodes of it for as long as they wanted to (and as long as James Burrows was healthy). A real shame that it all has to stop right now.

NBC: Will & Grace revival is coming to a "natural end" -- not because of rumored backstage drama

NBC Entertainment chair Paul Telegdy was asked at the TV press tour about the rumored tension between Megan Mullally and Debra Messing. “Some things come to a natural end,” Telegdy told TVLine. He said creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick "told the story they wanted to tell. Just wait for the finale. It’s epic; it ties together so many threads. It is coming to a great, natural end.”

I'm sure anyone will want to ask this: Will any of Will & Grace's revival episodes be added to its overall syndication package, even if those revival episodes are restricted to just cable and streaming? (W&G has not been in broadcast syndication in several years.) I was planning to watch the last W&G revival season on the NBC website, but fell asleep on getting to watch that season's first episode, so I missed that chance.
