ABC to Air Farrah Fawcett Documentary

ABC News presents a two-hour prime-time special on America's golden girl Farrah Fawcett. From that iconic red bathing suit poster to her role in the hit show "Charlie's Angels", Fawcett took the 1970s by storm and captivated the nation with her every move.

But in 2006, Fawcett was confronted with her biggest challenge when she was diagnosed with cancer and began an aggressive fight for her life. Now, almost 10 years after her passing, ABC News reports on her life, career, fame and lasting legacy, told through new interviews with those who knew her best, and rare footage from the intimate video diaries of her fight against cancer.

This is Farrah Fawcett airs Thursday, May 23 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. EDT on ABC.

The two-hour documentary features new interviews with actress Jaclyn Smith, Fawcett's co-star on "Charlie's Angels"; Alana Stewart, Fawcett's close friend who helped record her cancer battle for the two-hour documentary Farrah's Story; Bruce McBroom, the Hollywood photographer who shot Fawcett's iconic swimsuit poster; Mela Murphy, Fawcett's confidante and hairstylist; Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett's primary physician; and Dr. Ursula Jacob, Fawcett's physician in Germany who used alternative treatments for her cancer.

The documentary also includes Barbara Walters' landmark interviews with Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal, Fawcett's partner at the time of her death.

It's very sad to think she's no longer with us. For many she was what made Charlie's Angels a success. She also displayed her acting talents as Diane Downs in the 1989 film Small Sacrifices.

ABC's Farrah Fawcett Doc Tops First Night of Summer Season

Thursday marked the start of the summer TV season, and ratings predictably took a tumble as a result. The night's top show was This Is Farrah Fawcett, a two-hour ABC News documentary about the life of the late actress.

It averaged 5.78 million viewers and a 0.7 rating among adults 18-49, best on the broadcast networks in both measures.

I watched this and it made me feel so sad. She was such an icon and Charlie's Angels was an amazing show for its time. I still have trading cards and I used to have dolls too. I remember when she became ill and it looked like she beat it but didn't. Then of course she passed, but her passing was eclipsed by Michael Jackson and I remember thinking even in death she got screwed over.

I watched it. I thought it was well done and really had depth. I hope its ratings success will spur the networks on to more biographical stuff like this.

Was Farrah drawn to abusive men throughout her life? I don't know what happened in when she was married to Lee Majors other than he was one those guys who expected his wife to be home making dinner when he got home. This naturally became a problem when she hit it big with Charlie's Angels. Farrah did however, complain that even her manager who helped make her career was too abusive. Jay Bernstein took her on at Lee Majors' insistence.

We all know about Ryan O'Neal and how he was pretty much a violent narcissist (think Alec Baldwin but multiplied). He once knocked out his son Griffin's front teeth and held a deep resentment toward his daughter Tatum when she won the Oscar for Paper Moon. And don't get me started on the kid that he and Farrah had together, Redmond.

Farrah was once dating this filmmaker, James Orr, who was convicted of beating her. During an argument, he got on top of Farrah and ground her face into the driveway pavement.
