Default Will The Big Bang Theory be the last mainstream sitcom with a massive audience?

https://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...516-story.html

"While the Twitterverse has been in full theatrics over HBO’s fantasy blockbuster Game of Thrones as it too nears its end, it’s easy to overlook the significance of its more modest associate on broadcast television," says Yvonne Villarreal. "The comedy, which became TV’s longest-running multi-camera sitcom this season, has anchored Thursday nights since 2010 — consistently helping CBS maintain its standing as the most-watched network. While its ratings have receded in recent years, the show still commands an enviable audience. This season, it averaged 12.75 million total viewers (a number that rises to nearly 18 million when delayed viewing over a week is factored in), according to Nielsen — and it’s expected to wrap its run near the top of the ratings. That’s a notable run against the backdrop of declining ratings, shifting viewing habits and a saturation of content as the streaming era settles into place." CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl calls tonight's series finale "bittersweet," adding: “We’re heading to a conclusion of a landscape-altering show; a show that means a lot. I think it’s more than a CBS thing. It’s a network television thing. It was a monster hit for network television — for television in general … you take it for granted that the audience will be there for you week after week.”

How The Big Bang Theory became a megahit: "It’s smart about being dumb about being smart"

How did a show about geeks become so big that it plays everywhere, including hospital waiting rooms? Hank Stuever tried to find out and, after spending a day watching Big Bang reruns, writes: "I can only sit in slack-jawed respect for everything that made the show work." Stuever adds: "To start, there’s the precision of its concept matched with the rigid (some would say confining) simplicity of its format. It’s smart about being dumb about being smart. There’s the attention to detail that turned potentially niche characters — four male physics nerds with geeky pop-culture proclivities who all worked at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena — into appealingly broad subversions of old, sad stereotypes. There’s the irritatingly catchy theme song, supplied by the dorky Canadian rock band Barenaked Ladies, that boils the origin of all cosmic and earthly existence down to 20 seconds, emblematic of the show’s celebration of science and math, at a time when facts are dangerously dismissed as opinions. And there was the implicit but never acknowledged understanding that at least one of its characters — Sheldon — could be viewed as coping with a developmental disorder; Asperger’s, one might suggest, if one was reviewing another kind of show where characters are openly diagnosed and described. Over the years, Sheldon’s social awkwardness and off-putting superiority was woven into his friendships and eventual marriage as a matter of mirth, rather than being singled out for maudlin tonal shifts away from comedy. Sheldon caught on with America because we didn’t necessarily need him explained to us."

I like to think that The Goldbergs is pretty popular and draws in a good sized crowd for ABC. But as for CBS, I don't think they'll have another show go on to be as big of a hit as Big Bang Theory.

If you're talking off-net local syndication, The Goldbergs is doing okay-ish to so-so lately. Other than The Big Bang Theory and Last Man Standing, other sitcoms are doing decent or less off-net.

Probably so. The new sitcoms CBS advertised last night looked awful. Fox has cut back on sitcoms. There are too many things competing for attention now.
