TV ABC Cancels "Whiskey Cavalier"

"Whiskey Cavalier" Canceled at ABC after One Season, Will be Shopped Elsewhere By Warner Bros. TV
by Nellie Andreeva
May 12, 2019

It came down to the wire but ABC has opted not to renew its freshman spy drama "Whiskey Cavalier" starring Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan for a second season. I hear series producer Warner Bros. TV will be shopping it to other outlets/platforms.

While not entirely unexpected given the show’s ratings performance, this is still a stunning development as "Whiskey Cavalier" had been touted as one of ABC’s biggest new series for this season and became the network’s first scripted show to launch after the Oscars.

Since then, "Whiskey Cavalier" has seen its ratings decline until settling into subpar 0.4 adults 18-49 rating (Live+Same Day), airing in the Wednesday 10 PM slot picked so the comedic drama cold take advantage of ABC’s comedy block as a lead-in.

The drama is a major DVR gainer, more than doubling its Live+same delivery but it’s starting from a small base. Season to date, "Whiskey Cavalier" is averaging a 1.2 adults 18-49 and 6.6 million viewers.

ABC Boss on “Tough Decision” To Cancel "Whiskey Cavalier"
by Nellie Andreeva
May 14, 2019

In one of the most dramatic developments this upfront season, ABC at the 11th hour canceled its freshman spy drama "Whiskey Cavalier" starring Scott Foley and Lauren Cohan, after one season.

It was a tough decision, it was the last decision we made,” ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke said at the Disney upfront press conference Tuesday morning.

We thought we gave it very strong launch in spring. But we lost audience. We felt the biggest opportunity was to try something new. We looked for other time slots but did not see a real opportunity to grow.

Whiskey Cavalier ends with a few threads left dangling

ABC's surprise, last-minute cancelation didn't give the writers of the action dramedy series enough time for a proper ending. But Warner Bros. TV is still hopeful Whiskey Cavalier can find a new home.

Report: ABC mulls uncanceling Whiskey Cavalier

Hours after Whiskey Cavalier left threads dangling with its Season 1 finale that followed its surprise last-minute cancelation, there is talk that ABC is rethinking its decision. "Multiple sources confirm to TVLine that the network — which axed the Scott Foley-Lauren Cohan drama earlier this month at the 11th hour — may reverse its decision and order a second season, to bow at midseason," reports TVLine's Michael Ausiello. Talks between ABC and producer Warner Bros. Television are ongoing, per insiders, with one source putting the odds of the show returning at 50/50. The studio has also put feelers out to a number of streaming outlets. Reps for ABC and Warner Bros. declined to comment." Executive producer Bill Lawrence seemed to imply something may be afoot Wednesday morning, tweeting: "Tonight: great season finale of #WhiskeyCavalier. Maybe check it out? Make this a 'season' finale and not a series finale. Just an idea."

Hope they do change their minds and give it a second season. It's a good show, with lots of action, great characters and amazing scenery.

"Whiskey Cavalier" Officially Cancelled at ABC
by Nellie Andreeva
May 24, 2019

It’s official — ABC will not be reversing its cancellation decision on "Whiskey Cavalier". Creator/executive producer David Hemingson tweeted the news to fans.

I just got the sad news that @ABCNetwork has passed. #WhiskeyCavalier has been fully and finally cancelled,” he wrote. “It’s incredibly painful to say goodbye to this show and our extraordinary cast, but knowing that we made something you enjoyed – and that I believe will stand the test of time – makes it all worthwhile.

A "Passionate Email from Bill Lawrence" Led ABC Boss to Briefly Reconsider "Whiskey Cavalier" Cancellation
by Michael Ausiello
August 13 2019

It was an impassioned note from "Whiskey Cavalier" exec producer Bill Lawrence that led ABC to briefly consider reversing its decision to cancel the freshman Scott Foley-Lauren Cohan series, per the network’s top exec.

In an interview with TVLine last week, ABC president Karey Burke confirmed that she received “a passionate email” from Lawrence in the immediate aftermath of "Whiskey Cavalier’s" cancellation, and it was that plea that prompted her to reconsider the show’s Season 2 prospects.

He was just so deeply passionate about it,” the exec added. “He put his heart and soul into it. And he just asked us to take one last look. And we really did. It was tough financially and ratings-wise. We ultimately just decided to bet on the future.

I tried watching "Whiskey Cavalier" and I didn't get into it. I didn't think it had enough action, at least to my liking. Scott Foley was better on "The Unit", that was a good action show.

I was also kind-of glad that "Whiskey" got canned because it meant that Lauren Cohan could return to "The Walking Dead".

Lauren Cohan is still baffled by Whiskey Cavalier's cancelation

“I've never done something where more people have said, ‘Why the hell did they cancel that show?’” says Cohan, who returns to The Walking Dead with Sunday's episode. “Before everything (with COVID-19) started, I was in a Crate and Barrel or something, and this woman just came running up to me, and she was just freaked out over the show. But it was funny because she didn't know me from anything else. And she goes, ‘What else have you done? Because I had never seen you before. And this was my favorite show and how dare they cancel it!’”
