TV ABC Cancels "The Kids are Alright"

"The Kids are Alright" Cancelled at ABC after One Season
by Dominic Patten
May 10, 2019

The Tim Doyle created "The Kids are Alright" has been cancelled by ABC.

Penned and EP’d by the former "Last Man Standing" showrunner, the first season of the 1970s-set ensemble comedy premiered on October 16 last year and is scheduled to wrap up on May 21 in what will now be a series finale.

Its ratings have been a bit all over the map since its debut, which started extremely strong among the 18-49 demographic and then eroded and rebounded.

That's too bad, I kind of liked all those kids. The mom and dad were a little harsh though.

I thought it was kind of stupid but nothing else better was on at the time. They should cancel Single Parents.

All kinds of other stuff was on during it's timeslot. Personally I only watched the pilot and hated it. So I just went back to watching Star Trek on H&I instead.

"All kinds of other stuff was on during it's timeslot" is a weak argument. All kinds of other stuff are always on TV during EVERY timeslot.

Is it not true? You do have all kinds of things on at 8:30pm. You have a variety of sports that's going on like baseball, hockey and basketball. Then you have shows like NCIS, The Flash, The Village, and Master Chef on the major networks going head to head with it. Plus you have all the cable and diginet channels to compete with too. So in turn I don't find my argument to be weak. You literally have all kinds of stuff on in that timeslot.

Why Another Network Should Revive The Kids Are Alright

Why ABC should reverse its The Kids Are Alright cancelation decision

As TVLine points out, the canceled 1970s-set family freshman comedy had better demo numbers than renewed ABC comedies Black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat.

No ABC did the right thing in cancelling this show. If anything a different network should save Abby's. Now that show was worth keeping.

I watched both shows but TKAA was much better than Abby's. TKAA is the best comedy that has premiered since The Middle and deserved nurturing like The Middle got. ABC can forever bite me for treating TKAA like dirt and renewing the lousy combo of Single Parents and Bless This Mess from a bloody awful creator instead of the much superior TKAA.

I stick by my original statement. The Middle was mediocre at best. I agree renewing Single Parents was a bad idea. Bless This Mess however I think is a funny show. It's kind of a modern take on Green Acres.

The only thing Bless This Mess and Green Acres have in common is a similar concept. BTM has no catchy theme song, the cast is a lot weaker than Green Acres, and Paul Henning wouldn't have dreamed of making his classic that trashy. Bless This Mess is another Splitting Up Together for ABC, where it will easily get cancelled after a full season 2. This year ABC did not need a save face comedy renewal though with capped at 13 The Mayor and Alex, Inc. being SUT's only rookie competition (Roseanne revival was not a true rookie) the previous season.

TKAA and the Middle were both great shows.

ABC’s Karey Burke on "The Kids Are Alright" Cancellation: “Fanbase Was Not Strong Enough
by Dino-Ray Ramos
August 5, 2019

The ABC comedy "The Kids Are Alright" was canceled in May after one season and fans — including TCA members — still want answers. ABC Boss Karey Burke addressed the cancellation of the series saying that they looked at the show’s ratings from every angle but, “did not see enough upside.

They also examined its multi-platform and social media performances and it just didn’t look good for the series. “There did not seem to be a strong enough fanbase at the time,” Burke added. “This was a tough business decision.
