Ahead of the May 16 Season 3 finale, CBS All Access has ordered a fourth season of its critically praised drama series "The Good Fight", from co-creators Robert and Michelle King.

“The Good Fight is in the middle of an incredible third season and continues to be a flagship original series for the service,” said Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President, Original Content, CBS All Access.

“Its visionary creators Robert and Michelle King and the extraordinary cast continue to explore the cultural climate with insight, humor and courage, and we can’t wait to see where these indelible characters go next.”

The Good Fight will focus less on Trump in Season 4 and more on the aftermath of his policies

“We’re going to comment more on what the current political situation is doing to the law, and some of that has to do with Trump directly but a lot of it has to do with the collateral damage of the dropping of present-day values and guidelines,” co-creator Robert King tells TVLine. “There’s a tendency that people have now of thinking subpoenas can be ignored, and we wanted to look at how it played out because so much of courtroom drama requires people following the rules. But what kind of courtroom drama do you have if (suddenly the rules don’t matter)?”

The Good Fight Season 4 to feature Hugh Dancy and Michael J. Fox -- and pay homage to It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Dancy will join the law firm in Season 4, Robert and Michelle King announced at the TV press tour. They also revealed that Michael J. Fox and Zach Grenier will reprise their roles from The Good Wife in Season 4. The couple also announced that after having Season 3 episode titles pay homage to Friends, The Good Fight will use episode titles in Season 4 inspired by It's Always Sunny, with every episode starting with "The Gang..." Robert King added that Season 4 will deal with “issues with big mergers and some of the things that are going on right now within the political world.” Pointing to all the recent mergers, including Disney and Fox, King added: “We’re all kind of agitated by this gathering together of these large, Amazon-like forces that want to control what we say and do."

Delroy Lindo is exiting The Good Fight as a series regular to join ABC pilot Harlem's Kitchen

Lindo's deal is up at the end of Season 4 of the CBS All Access drama, which is currently filming, so Lindo has joined the ABC pilot about a successful Harlem restaurateur. But The Good Fight has left Lindo's future return open. “We will miss Delroy dreadfully. He was both a figurehead for the show, but also a figurehead for the fictional firm,” Robert and Michelle King said in a statement. "He combined comedy and Shakespearian drama in a perfect balance. We know he wanted to try different things, and although we’ll miss him, we hope we can get him back occasionally as a guest star. So SPOLIER ALERT: we won’t be killing Adrian Boseman.” The Kings adjusted Lindo's schedule so he can work on the ABC pilot. “My time working on The Good Fight has been a rich and rewarding collaboration with Robert and Michelle King," he said. "The lines of communication between us have always been open and respectful, and that’s made the journey of creating Adrian Boseman deeply gratifying."

The Good Fight unveils trailer for Season 4, which will feature an alternative reality where Hillary Clinton beats Donald Trump

The CBS All Access drama returns April 9 with an episode that imagines Clinton beating Trump in the 2016 presidential election. "In the episode, penned by series creators Robert King and Michelle King and directed by Brooke Kennedy, Christine Baranski’s liberal legal eagle Diane Lockhart is overjoyed by the outcome, but she soon realizes that her dream reality may have unexpected consequences," reports TVLine's Michael Ausiello. "The twisty premiere brings the show full circle, considering the 2017 pilot episode kicked off with a horrified Diane learning that Trump won the election. (The Kings, assuming Clinton was going to prevail, famously had to rework the pilot script to alter the outcome, turning Diane’s dream scenario into a nightmare.)"

"The Good Wife was chock full of quirky characters, but with its spinoff, creators Michelle and Robert King and Phil Alden Robinson have given themselves license to indulge their wildest impulses," says Inkoo Kang. "That's likely the key ingredient in The Good Fight's magic sauce: It manages to out-crazy the Trump years — an era during which many cultural critics, at least during the #Resistance, deemed political satire dead, because no caricature of Trump was more ridiculous than the man himself. The Kings, long praised for the topical freshness of The Good Wife's storylines, seemed to take out-surrealizing our surreal times as a personal challenge. The result, happily, is the most bonkers TV show this side of Atlanta. Last season alone, The Good Fight killed off a Stephen Miller stand-in via swatting; featured a potential client who may or may not be a Melania Trump ready to flee the White House; and introduced a Roy Cohn acolyte munching on crackers while injecting his forehead with Botox…and receiving a blowjob...And yet the show's season four premiere might be its most bonkers episode yet, as well as one of its funniest and most introspective." Kang adds: "The episode's biggest challenge to its anti-Trump audience is in asking if a symbolic feminist victory like Clinton's election to the White House would give even more cover to the kind of aspirational, corporate-friendly feminism that has little to no impact on the lives of ordinary or vulnerable women — and has no use for righteous female rage."

"At times, it just seems too much like a warped thought experiment to make any real conclusions—especially ones rooted in character. The Good Fight’s absurdism is part of its charm, but this presidency funhouse teeters too close to the edge of gimmicky. It’s funny, and it dispenses a fair amount of cultural commentary, but it’s not quite satire. There are opportunities to dig deeper that go missed, especially when it comes to Diane’s processing of this world."
• The alternate reality episode starts off shaky before delving into its dark consequences: "Fantasizing about what might have happened if Trump had lost is a parlor game that has long since outlived its usefulness; it’s a sedative in a moment when we need to be more alert than ever," says Sam Adams. "No amount of binge-watching West Wing reruns is going to make sense of the United States as it is now, and the idea that ideologues will slink back into the shadows if their hypocrisies are uncovered in a sufficiently punchy monologue is not only fanciful but, at this point, outright dangerous. The fantasy starts to turn, though, when Diane realizes that Hillary’s victory has some unwanted consequences."
• Christine Baranski considers the Season 4 premiere her favorite Good Fight episode: "The first episode exists almost on its own," she tells Variety. "It’s like a little prologue, and it doesn’t necessarily launch the whole season or all of the characters, but you could say it launches Diane in another direction. Although I would argue Diane has always been a fighter, it’s the nature of the fight that changes every year with where she puts her energy and how she focuses her intellect and her anger. I really do think there are some marvelous surprises in store for the audience — maybe more than any other season that we’ve had. We’ve never had an episode such as the first episode of the fourth season. When I read it, I said to the Kings, 'This is my favorite episode you’ve ever written for me in the 11 years I’ve played the character.'"
• Why Robert and Michelle King wanted to envision a world with Hillary Clinton as president and Matt Lauer and Harvey Weinstein still in their jobs: “We wanted to be a little bit logical about it," says Michelle King. "Of course initially it seemed like nirvana that Hillary won the election, but then we wanted to think through, logically, what would the negative consequences have been — and there would have been a lot of vile men still doing vile things. Don’t kid yourselves that things would have been perfect another way.”
• Robert King says "CBS was willing to let us run with it": "When we get an itch, we get to scratch it," he says. "Christine Baranski is one of the great comic actresses working today, and she really leans into it with this episode."

The Good Fight isn't afraid to be ridiculous in an effort to underscore the absurdity of the times

The CBS All Access drama "excels at satire that is both over-the-top and incredibly sharp — a talent that has made it the first truly good series about the Trump era, even as it continues to unfold.," says Joshua Rivera, in tackling this week's President Hillary Clinton episode. "It’s a show that’s not afraid to be ridiculous in an effort to underscore the absurdity of the times, while affixing its drama to underappreciated stories ripped from headlines that the news cycle glosses over all too quickly. The thread tying this season together, for example, involves a top-secret memo that allows the rich to completely opt out of the legal process, a plotline clearly lifted from last year’s long line of Trump associates who simply refused to comply with subpoenas — a criminal offense. But perhaps the biggest reason The Good Fight resonates is in how it takes advantage of its case-of-the-week structure to continually widen its lens to look at how the systemic corruption of the judicial system is felt by people beyond its world of lawyers, who, by nature of their profession, must continually compromise. Sometimes it falters in this, reflecting the blindspots of the characters it usually is self-aware about."
