When Parks and Rec debuted on April 9, 2009, it was basically a female version of The Office, with Amy Poehler in the Michael Scott role. The show from the pilot "wasn't much like the show it would become," says Kelly Connolly. But Parks and Rec couldn't maintain the cynicism of The Office because the stakes with public service were higher. "Parks and Recreation began with a reinvention," says Connolly. "This was fitting, since so much of the show would come to be about reinvention: a pit became a park, a disgraced former teen mayor remade himself into a congressman, a recalled city councillor from Pawnee went on to become governor of Indiana (and then maybe president). By the time the NBC sitcom hit its stride, it had grasped how deep, substantial change starts on a surface level — how thankless, monotonous work opens doors to new opportunities, and even to joy. But it didn't understand any of this until after it began the work of making itself over."

Rashida Jones pays a touching tribute to Parks and Recreation on its 10th anniversary

"Ten years ago today, the first episode of @nbcparksandrec aired," Jones wrote on Instagram last night. "And thus began the most magical seven years of my professional life playing Ann Perkins and working with kind, hilarious, and talented people that I still call friends. The cast, crew and writers spent a decent amount of time worrying about getting canceled, we nervously waited for our (usually) very low ratings mornings after we aired and, every season, we prayed that we would get picked up, even if it was just for six more. Because we loved it. Needless to say, over time, many, many people have come to love the show with unexpected fervor. I don't know if the series would have been what it was if we could've foreseen that. Holding onto each other tight and treasuring every moment together was a huge part of what is on screen. It's hard to believe that Parks And Recreation became a surprise hit for NBC and based off the success of the sitcoms Community and The Office NBC would've not had a monster hit with Parks And Recreation and with it's funny storylines in each episode helped keep the show on it's feet. What I also found shocking is that two Disney characters appear in this show "Joy from Disney's Inside Out and Barley from Disney's Onward" and why I think Parks And Recreation became a smash hit is because of Amy Poehler's talent and if it wasn't for the success of this show Chris Pratt would've never become a famous top Hollywood actor moving on to big roles in The Five Year Engagement Jurassic World Guardians Of The Galaxy The Avengers and The Lego Movie and Onward. I think I might give this show a watch when I see it in reruns just to see Barley act
