In effect, a movie that not everyone knows exist. In other words, when these particular movies were released a) they either flopped or bombed b) received negative reviews from critics. They may have sort of developed a small cult following over time. They weren't necessarily great movies for sure but they do looked good on some level.

The one that first comes to mind is, The 7th Victim (1943)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036341...?mode=desktop& It shows up from time to time on TMC. I just heard about and watched it last year. One critic at the time suggested that it might make more sence if the protectionists played it backwards! |

In 1975, a group of five men are driving home after working in a forest when they see a mysterious light. Intrigued, Travis Walton (D.B. Sweeney) leaves the truck -- only to be sucked up by a flying saucer. The other four men report the strange event, but they are skeptically interrogated by Lt. Frank Watters (James Garner), who suspects that murder is behind Walton's disappearance. When Walton reappears five days later, his story of alien abduction is met with disbelief.

I thought this was going to be a thread about a movie that might've been popular when it was first released and became forgotten over the years. The reason why is that if a movie became obscure because it "bombed", then it was never seen by anyone and therefore was never in a position to be "forgotten". So, my first thought was, "Love Story." I don't think anyone remembers this film at all. It doesn't even get referenced in pop culture anymore.
In any event, to play along, some movies that I recently discovered and had no idea existed before: -The Detective (starring Frank Sinatra) -No Way to Treat a Lady (starring Rod Steiger) -This is Not a Test (which is on YouTube) -A ton of films from the late 1920s and early 1930s, which can be found under a YouTube channel called "PizzaFlix" and in the playlist, "Precode Hollywood." One of my favorites is, "Before Morning." -The Movies! Network also shows a lot of super obscure movies, especially film noirs, stuff like "Johnny O'Clock" and "Fourteen Hours (starring Richard Basehart)". |

My all time favorite movie gets no respect. Kelsey Grammer's version of A Christmas Carol, several other versions air during the Christmas season, but this far superior one mostly gets ignored.
Despite Dolly Parton's popularity, her Coat of Many Colors Christmas movies also get ignored. Since the two years they originally premiered, they have already quickly vanished from the air. For non-Christmas movies, the worst case of being forgotten is the Matthew Broderick, Kristen Chenoweth, and Victor Garber version of The Music Man. It hasn't aired anywhere since the original premiere, my mom even looked for it on DVD and there was no trace of this version. The Buddy Hackett original is ok but I much prefer the remake on this, those three actors are popular elsewhere but hasn't helped this excellent edition become mainstream. |
