How come they had a fallen out? As a matter of fact, according to Ed O'Neill, his relationship with Amanda Bearse started becoming estranged after about the third year. It got so bad that Amanda didn't invite either Ed, David Faustino, or Ronald Leavitt to her wedding. One theory that I've read is that Ed O'Neill and David Faustino were deep down inside, playing themselves most of the time. And the jokes they would tell on the show to the Marcy character were real jokes to them. And that is why the jokes came out so real and so funny. And perhaps that is why Amanda would not invite them to her wedding, because Ed and David actually made fun of her during the shooting of the show. |

So Ed really did think she looked like a chicken who'd a thunk it.

He probably didn't like how Al was portrayed during the years she directed.

From that interview both parties come off as petty and childish but Amanda came off as arrogant when it came to talking about her directing which almost ruined the show.

I had heard that they didn't get along, but I had no idea it was that bad.

Number one reason why you don't let actors direct or write episodes of their shows and Ed is right if he would've left the show would go under because without Al all you have is a typical 90's adult sitcom.

This story sounds like how the feud between Vivian Vance and William Frawley started. As I understand it Vivian said something about Frawley's age and got insulted. In this case it's sounds as if O Neill said something that Bearse overheard that angered her. Amanda had every right to invite the people she wanted at her wedding. Bearse felt that David Ed and Ron did something to her. However Ed O neill seems to have understood that perhaps he overstepped his bounds from an interview. I do not know about David or Ron how they feel today. However If Ed is serious about some peace between him and Amanda then I would be disappointed if Amanda did not meet him half way

According to Amanda, Ed was not happy when she started directing episodes and having more of a say in the show. He also apparently couldn't resist chiding her about feminist stuff (and possibly lesbian stuff) and I doubt she's the type to laugh it off.

I bet the NO' MAM years would've been allot different had she not been directing and not had any input.

I still love watching re-runs of this show. I might actually enjoy the show more now than I did when it was in first runs, because I have grown more cynical with age.
The episodes after about 1992 don't seem as funny, perhaps this coincided with Amanda "evolving"as O'neill describes it in the longer video. |

Marcy's whole character was presumably meant to be a parody of the shrill, hypocritical women who claim to be feminists but really just want power over men and also hate other women. It seemed in the case with Amanda, she was actually closer to that depiction in real life (in other words, she didn't really have to "do too much" acting) than you would imagine.

I see fault on both sides, but maybe Ed didn't have to throw his power on the show in Amanda's face.
