Rent: Live's terrible ratings on Fox prompted NBC to scrap its Hair Live! musical, opting instead to seek a more family friendly title. They join other troubled musicals, from NBC's twice-delayed Bye Bye Birdie to ABC's "quickly abandoned" attempt to do Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men. Still, The Hollywood Reporter notes that ABC is considering an original production, while NBC is in talks for three titles. As one source says in downplaying the idea that TV musicals are dead: "In the same way comedy or drama has been 'dead' in the past, you're only as good as your next attempt." |

When it comes down to it live TV musicals have always been the weakest links in entertainment and whenever the time has come to announce new live TV musicals they are usually there for the stations to make millions of dollars in ratings and to announce the debut of a new and upcoming actor/actress to become famous in a career. Take for instance when NBC had a live TV musical of The Sound Of Music with singer Carrie Underwood it scored a huge audience when it aired during the holidays and I think the reason why The Sound Of Music live TV musical scored mega ratings was simply because of Carrie Underwood. Soon after the surprise of The Sound Of Music NBC knew that live TV musicals were a holiday success and soon repeated that success with Hairspray Live and then The Wiz Live soon followed. Once NBC saw how successful live TV musicals could be FOX started to copy NBC by putting out their own versions of live TV musicals and soon had live TV musicals such as A Christmas Story Live and the recent Rent Live and many others FOX knew that same formula that NBC used for their musicals could work magic which wasn't as successful as NBC's tried and true formula for live TV musicals which is why I think Rent Live failed in ratings. But if NBC had live TV musicals on Broadway shows such as Oliver Mamma Mia Cats or Tommy I think people would actually watch instead of musicals like Billy Elliott Hamilton or The Great Gatsby. A second thing that makes live TV musicals the weakest links on TV is that families with kids watch them too and if they had live TV musicals that families could watch together it would score high ratings in TV. Take for instance if there was a live TV musical of The King And I or Oklahoma you bet families would watch them and I bet if they made a live TV musical of Mary Poppins or My Fair Lady or even The Music Man or Mame it would be huge in TV . In 1992 CBS got into the live TV music bandwagon with the live TV musical of Gypsy starring Bette Midler and when it aired during the holiday season of 1992 it got high ratings simply because of Bette Midler and CBS has never had another live TV musical since. But as long as Broadway musicals survive who knows where the live TV musical trend will go

Hi, Bestie! I agree with you. Musicals never get high ratings. They become boring. Musical variety shows, they should bring back. If they could only find some modern music worth listening to.
