Question "Back in St. Olaf," or "picture it".

Which is the funnier running gag?

I'd much rather hear one of Sophia's "picture it..." stories.
Rose annoys the hell out of me. She is just way too mind numbingly dumb. Nice, but DUMB.

Sophia. Rose really gave me a headache and drove me crazy.

"Picture It", but it's close imho.

Oh, St. Olaf, hands down! They're the funniest stories on the show.

Interesting though the OP didn't include "stories of the south" in the original question.

As Betty White will tell you, Rose isn't dumb, she is just totally naieve (that is, until the later seasons, when, unfortunately, they did start writing her as more "dumb"---and Blanche as proud to be a slut, and Sophia as meaner).

Gotta say I loved them both, especially the look of utter annoyance from the other Girls when Rose launched into one of her convoluted St. Olaf stories. The Girls normally listened to Sophia's Picture It stories with interest, until the very end when she would come out of left field with a whopper of a lie!

I don't care what Betty White said. Rose was DUMB, not naive. Naive is someone like "Chrissy" from Three's Company. Chrissy was not dumb, just goofy and naive. Rose was always DUMB, STUPID AND ANNOYING, but nice.

This is why I love her more on Hot in Cleveland. She played the Estelle Getty part and she was funnier and the character was smart.
