New "Psych" Movie on Hold — Here's Why

A new "Psych" movie has hit a pineapple-sized speed bump. First, the good news: A sequel to last December’s super-fun Psych: The Movie is in the early stages of development at Universal Cable Productions and USA Network.

Now for the bad: The project is on hold.




Although a rep for USA/UCP declined to comment, TVLine has learned that talks had been underway to potentially shoot a second movie later this year.

But the pic was pushed due to scheduling conflicts with leads James Roday and Dule Hill (Roday stars in the new ABC drama A Million Little Things, while Hill is busy with USA’s Suits, where he was recently promoted to a series regular).




I hear USA/UCP remain interested in making the unofficially-titled Psych: The Sequel, provided a production window opens up that works for the franchise’s main players.

A "Psych" sequel is down but far from out. Speaking at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour on Tuesday, series co-lead James Roday maintained that, despite a scheduling hiccup with his new ABC drama "A Million Little Things", a follow-up to last December’s Psych: The Movie is very much on the drawing board.

“We’ll figure out a way to do it,” Roday told reporters. “All the pieces are still there, and everyone wants to do it. We’ve got to get Tim Omundson back to his Psychos.”

(Omundson was recovering from a stroke during production of the first movie, limiting his involvement to just a cameo.)

Psych The Movie 2 Gets Green Light at USA Network

USA Network has given the green light to Psych: The Movie 2, a follow-up to its successful Psych: The Movie, starring original cast members James Roday, Dulé Hill, Maggie Lawson, Kirsten Nelson, Corbin Bernsen and Tim Omundson.

The sequel hails from Universal Content Productions in association with Thruline Entertainment. Production is set to begin next month in Vancouver, Canada, with premiere slated for later this year.




The movie picks up with Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiter (Omundson) ambushed on the job and left for dead. In a vintage Psych-style Hitchcockian nod, he begins to see impossible happenings around his recovery clinic.

Shawn (Roday) and Gus (Hill) return to Lassie’s side in Santa Barbara and are forced to navigate the personal, the professional, and possibly the supernatural. Separated from their new lives in San Francisco, our heroes find themselves unwelcome in their old stomping grounds as they secretly untangle a twisted case without the benefit of the police, their loved ones, or the quality sourdough bakeries of the Bay Area.

What they uncover will change the course of their relationships forever.

Joel McHale and Jimmi Simpson Teased as Guest Stars on "Psych" Movie Sequel

Psych: The Movie 2 is taking shape with the teasing of two guest stars.

Series vet Timothy Omundson — who for the sequel will fully reprise his role as Police Chief Lassiter (after sitting out nearly all of the first TV-movie as the actor recovered from a stroke) — teased on Twitter that Joel McHale will be a “very special guest star” for the follow-up film.




Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) meanwhile tweeted out a video in which he steps off a Psych-branded longboard (covet!) to suggest that he will put in another encore, having played the Mr. Yang-obsessed, dearly departed police psychologist Dr. Marion “Mary” Lightly on the USA series and in a Psych: The Movie cameo.

“It’s gonna happen,” Simpson says in the video below. “Psych: The Movie 2.”

Dulé Hill Confirms Psych: The Movie 2 will have a time jump

"Psych" fans will have to wait a little longer for the second movie sequel. Originally slated to premiere in 2019, the film will not debut until at least spring 2020. That is because the movie is moving from USA Network, home of the original series, to Peacock, NBCU’s upcoming streaming service, which launches in April 2020.

The sequel has been given a cheeky new title, Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, named after one of the show’s main characters, Santa Barbara Police Chief Carlton Lassiter, played by Tim Omundson.

That absolutely sucks! I would have been able to see the movie sequel on USA. I am getting sick and tired of everything being relegated to dozens of streaming sites you have to pay extra for.

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home To Air in Spring on Peacock as Maggie Lawson Hopes for More Sequels

It’s taken longer than expected but the second "Psych" movie is set to air this spring and star Maggie Lawson is already hoping for more.

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home was originally planned to launch last year but moved from USA Network to forthcoming streaming service Peacock. Lawson told Deadline that it will air this spring after the NBCU platform launches in April.




“One of the things I love about this movie, this time around is, I feel that for Shawn and Juliet there’s been eight years of ‘will they, won’t they,’ then it was ‘they will,’ then there was like a little, ‘where are we, what are we doing?’ and then we hadn’t gotten married yet. Now we’re married,” she said.

“There’s no worry, there’s no issue. He’s doing his psychic thing and I’m doing my detective thing, but for the most part, we’re just enjoying married life.”

EW has confirmed that Richard Schiff will appear in the forthcoming Psych: The Movie sequel, reuniting him with his "The West Wing" costar Dulé Hill.

Schiff will play Dr. Hirsch, the founder of a high-end private medical recovery center whose no-nonsense approach is in conflict with most things Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Hill) do.
