Oh yeah, those scenes from the "Cosby Show" pilot always bothered me too. It plays how harsh Cliff and Claire are on Theo (even quipping about their son being "lazy", when the poor guy had to work harder than most of his peers to even get a C average) for laughs, and I couldn't stand that at all. They were simply never willing to accept, that a son of a doctor and a lawyer would "settle" for a blue collar job (which Theo had been prepared to do).
Sure, they still had no idea that Theo had undiagnosed dyslexia at that point. So I guess that we can say that Cliff and Claire simply didn't know why Theo struggled, and had to jump to unfair conclusions. They did look ashamed of themselves, when it was discovered at long last that he had a disability. And I loved how Vanessa told them off for how unfair they had been. But that is true even today. It seems to be much easier for people to call others "lazy", instead of actually understanding that the "laziness" might be a disability or perhaps even an illness. |
