Janet Jackson is celebrating her 52nd today. The youngest sibling in a musically talented family, she appeared as part of the family act periodically in the mid-seventies, and then became known as a child actress on the final two seasons of Good Times, in the role of Penny Gordon Woods. She signed her first recording contract at 16. Her first two albums were moderately successful, but in her late teens, Jackson began to assert more creative control over her own work, and her third album, Control, was a huge success. It reached #1 on the Billboard 200, brought Jackson her first Grammy nominations, and included five singles that reached #5 or higher on the Hot 100, including her first #1 hit.


Jackson’s subsequent career has continued to be enormously successful. The “Princess of Pop” has had ten #1 singles and won five Grammys, and six of her eight studio albums since Control have reached #1 (the other two peaked at “only” #2 on the Billboard 200). While she has had setbacks (Google her name along with “wardrobe malfunction,” for starters), Jackson has been one of the most influential pop and R&B performers of her time, having been a major influence on the likes of Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Britney Spears.
