"Arrested Development" Season 4 is Getting a Remix
"Arrested Development" Season 4 is Getting a Remix
by Denise Petski May 1, 2018 The fourth season of "Arrested Development" will be released again — as a remix. Creator Mitch Hurwitz revealed on social media that he’s recut the entire season and will be releasing it on Netflix as Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences. The original Season 4 focused on one character per episode. “The goal was that by the end of the season a unified story of cause and effect would emerge for the viewer — full of surprises about how the Bluths were responsible for most of the misery they had endured,” Hurwitz wrote. In between Season 4 and the upcoming Season 5, Hurwitz said he recut the season, “shuffling the content from 15 individualized stories into 22 interwoven stories the length of the original series,” admittedly to see if he “could make some money” in eventual syndication. But also, he said, “as a comedic experiment to see if new jokes and a new perspective would emerge from a remix that features all the Bluths in every episode, and where the simultaneity of the story plays out chronologically.” The recut version will begin streaming May 4 on Netflix. Hurwitz also noted that Season 5 will be coming soon. http://deadline.com/2018/05/arrested...tz-1202380474/ |

Netflix is making it difficult to watch the original, non-remixed version of Arrested Development Season 4
The Mitch Hurwitz-remixed edition is available as of today, but Netflix viewers will have to take extra steps if they want to watch the original version. Arrested Development's remixed Season 4 is much zippier, but it isn't much improved Mitch Hurwitz's Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences transforms 13 30-plus minute episodes into 22 23-ish minute episodes, and the results are a better-paced and more binge-watching friendly show, says Kelly Lawler. However, that doesn't make up for Season 4's biggest flaw: that cast members filmed their scenes separately from each other. "The editing also can't fix the fact that they just couldn't get these actors in the same room very often," says Lawler. "The spark of Arrested was often in the chemistry between the entire ridiculous cast reacting off each other." Arrested Development Season 4 remix sparks cast pay dispute Creator Mitch Hurwitz is making extra money from the 22-episode, 22-minute recut Season 4 episodes, dubbed Arrested Development Season 4 Remix: Fateful Consequences, which is aimed at making that season more syndication-friendly. But the rest of the cast isn't, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which points out that the remix uses footage that wasn't part of the original 15 episodes. According to The Hollywood Reporter's Lesley Goldberg, "Reps for the cast have asked for additional fees to correspond with the additional episodes but 20th has balked, arguing that it has the right to re-edit the existing episodes that have already aired however it chooses without paying the actors more. The cast position is that the additional episode count effectively reduces the pay-per-episode that was negotiated, especially since the studio stands poised for a financial windfall thanks to a possible syndication pact. " Arrested Development's Season 4 remix is such a mess it might as well be called "Ron Howard Audiobook" "Mitch Hurwitz tore apart a great season of television simply because viewers didn’t like it," Daniel Schroeder says of the Season 4 remix. "Now we’re stuck with a misshapen garbage heap of comedy remnants." He adds: "The remix suffers from an aggressive amount of narration. It might as well just be a Ron Howard audiobook. To stitch together all these disjointed but intersecting plots Howard must over-narrate every step of the way, constantly reminding the viewer of all the plot threads stuffed into each 22-minute episode. The remix trades delayed gratification for cheap shortcuts to punchlines that fall flat without any substance to support them." Arrested Development cast to get a pay bump for remixed Season 4 episodes Producer 20th Century Fox will compensate the actors for seven episodes. The remix expanded Season 4 from 15 to 22 episodes. |
