The Hollywood Reporter's story last week on ESPN's new morning show starring Mike Greenberg, Michelle Beadle and Jalen Rose came with the headline: "ESPN Plans to Wake Up Woke With New Morning Show," implying that Get Up will delve into political topics. But Greenberg says that headline was misleading. "I can tell you I was on that call," he tells Sporting News. "I was in that interview. What Jalen said was, 'If the president tweets something about sports while we’re on the air, then we will talk about it.' Somehow that became a headline that we’re going to be a 'woke' talk show. I don’t even know what that means, much less how it relates to what we were talking about. That, in my opinion, was a very misleading headline relative to the intention of the show."

ESPN's Get Up morning show feels like a mashup of all of ESPN's successful shows
ESPN's expensive new morning show premiered Monday looking like it's still hasn't found its footing. As Bryan Curtis notes, "It strives to be a show built from pieces of other successful ESPN shows: SportsNation; Around the Horn; NBA Countdown; and even that old warhorse SportsCenter. In an interesting decision, the Get Up crew did SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays—the very same ones that were showing on ESPN2—each hour. The message seemed to be: This is all the stuff you like about ESPN, only we’re doing it much earlier."

ESPN's Get Up ratings have been disappointing so far
While it's still early, ESPN's pricey new morning show has delivered fewer viewers than the SportsCenter airings it replaced.
