In This Is Me, Metz, reveals how her stepfather would beat her and force her to do humiliating weigh-ins. “My body seemed to offend him, but he couldn’t help but stare, especially when I was eating," she writes. "He joked about putting a lock on the refrigerator. We had lived with a lack of food for so long that when it was there, I felt like I had to eat it before it disappeared. Food was my only happiness.”

Very sweet lady. Met her at her book signing in NYC yesterday evening.

The actress who plays Beth, Susan Kelechi Watson, made a surprise appearance as the host of the opening Q&A. She left after that and did not stick around for the signing.
