Default Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon is "poised" to run for governor of New York

http://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/...n-for-governor

NY1 reports that Nixon has "begun the process of assembling staff to lay the groundwork for a competitive campaign" to challenge current New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary in September.

Here are seven Sex and the City episodes that prove Cynthia Nixon would make a great governor or New York
The former HBO star is poised to become the latest celebrity to run for governor.

Sex and the City jokes greet Cynthia Nixon's official announcement that she's running for New York governor
"Andrew Cuomo gets his Miranda warning," tweeted New York Daily News columnist Robert A. George in reaction to Nixon's campaign announcement video. The Daily Beast's Erin Ryan added: "What Sex & The City character are you? I’m angry Andrew Cuomo from the future."

Sex and the City stars express their support for Cynthia Nixon's gubernatorial campaign
"I am so proud of @CynthiaNixon , no one cares more than she does about EVERY person getting a fair change and a good education," tweeted Kristin Davis. "I know that she would be an excellent Governor !" Willie Garson added: "I cant think of anyone who's more prepared, more caring, more educated on the issues and more READY than @cynthiaenixon." ALSO: What Carrie Bradshaw would think of Miranda running for governor of New York.

Kim Cattrall backing Cynthia Nixon for New York governor
"I support & respect any former colleague’s right to make their own career choices," Cattrall tweeted when asked about her Sex and the City co-star's campaign.

Cynthia Nixon receives support from Sex and the City love interest "Steve" and housekeeper "Magda"
David Eigenberg, who played Steve, and Lynn Cohen, who played Magda, both think Nixon would make a great New York governor. "She’s incredibly smart and caring, diplomatic and brave,” Eigenberg, who isn't voting since he doesn't live in New York, wrote in an email. “I truly believe she has a genuine and heartfelt desire to move towards a common good for all the people of the Great State of New York.” ALSO: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo declines to say if he has a favorite Sex and the City character.

Is there a Sex and the City dismissiveness to Cynthia Nixon's candidacy for New York governor?

Yes, Nixon is and will always be closely identified with Miranda Hobbes. She even capitalized on that association in her announcement video. But the reaction to her candidacy seems to be in line with the reaction to Sex and the City, says Jen Chaney. In contrast, other celebrities-turned-politicians -- from Clint Eastwood to Arnold Schwarzenegger to Al Franken to Donald Trump -- were taken more seriously despite their entertainment backgrounds. "I’ll admit that I may be extra-sensitive to the premature disregard for Nixon’s candidacy because it reflects the way Sex and the City often has been treated: as a breezy, meaningless show about ladies," says Chaney. "When we talk about the series that changed everything for HBO and television in general, The Sopranos is the one we point to, which isn’t wrong at all. But it also doesn’t capture the full picture of what was happening on TV in the late 1990s and early 2000s, when Sex and the City became a phenomenon not simply because the women on the show drank cosmos and spoke frankly about their sexuality, but because it dealt with distinctly female experiences that women rarely saw depicted on television. So when I saw Cynthia Nixon not being taken seriously after her announcement — being described as that woman from Sex and the City — it triggered the same defensive posture I assume with regard to the series." She adds: "Being a well-known actor shouldn’t pave an immediate path to a governorship or a seat in Congress. But it also shouldn’t always be a disqualifier either. Sex and the City was smarter than it often gets credit for, and Cynthia Nixon is smarter than some people were giving her credit for yesterday, too."

How not to embarrass yourself when linking Sex and the City and Cynthia Nixon's run for governor
Mistakes the media have made so far this week include The Associated Press calling her HBO comedy "Sex in the City" and conflating Nixon with her character Miranda Hobbes. The New York Times' Ginia Bellafante, meanwhile, said voters might be concerned that Nixon starred on a show "that promoted a vision of New York that stands entirely in opposition to her professed values. It was the HBO series, beyond any other entertainment, that helped solidify the image of the city as a luxury brand — an elite, fantastical consumer paradise where it was never too early or late in the day to buy an $800 pair of shoes." To which Heather Schwedel responds: "First of all, it was a TV show (and a fictional one at that)! And Nixon was an actor on it, meaning she said the (fictional) lines that were given to her by the TV show’s writers. Do we blame Jon Hamm for the sexist, racist excesses of 1960s advertising?" ALSO: Miranda Hobbes is not running for governor.

Why hasn't Sarah Jessica Parker endorsed Cynthia Nixon?
Page Six reports Parker has been "undecided" about her Sex and the City co-star's run for New York governor. “Cynthia has been my friend and colleague since we were little girls," Parker said through her spokesperson. "I look forward to talking to her about her New York state gubernatorial bid.” According to Page Six, HBO worries that a schism with Nixon could destroy any possibility of a future Sex and the City sequel. "They could maybe do it without (Kim) Cattrall, but they can’t do without Nixon, too," a source tells Page Six.

Sarah Jessica Parker explains why Sex and the City co-star Cynthia Nixon should be elected New York governor
Parker has already said she's supporting Nixon. But she went into detail on why Nixon is qualified at the Tribeca Film Festival. "She’s been an activist her whole life,” Parker told Vanity Fair, adding: “There is policy that matters to her. She’s concerned about where our dollars and how are dollars are being spent. And like many formidable women, she decided now was the time to talk about those things,” explained Parker. “It’s exciting. I think it’s good for our city to have those conversations. It’s always good to have a challenger. As we know, great candidates deserve great challengers.”

Cynthia Nixon to give her first national TV interview as a candidate to Wendy Williams
The former Sex and the City star will discuss her campaign for New York governor on Wednesday's The Wendy Williams Show.

Cynthia Nixon tells Wendy Williams that her opponent for New York governor was also once a celebrity
“It is tough,” Nixon said on Wednesday's Wendy Williams Show, which was pre-taped, when asked about the questions regarding her celebrity status. “People talk a lot to me about being a celebrity entering this race. I have to say, when Andrew Cuomo ran eight years ago, he was a celebrity because he was the son of Mario Cuomo.”
