From The Good Place to Search Party to Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, the plot twist is no longer the realm of the TV drama, says Rachel Aroesti. “Partly as a ploy to rejuvenate the slightly stale sitcom format: surprises are funny, and a twist in a sitcom is doubly surprising because you don’t expect it to be there,” she says. “It’s also something that goes hand in hand with the long-brewing trend for high-concept comedy.”

I think the answer is obvious and simple. These days with so many networks and channels to choose from producers and writers are doing whatever they can to get people to watch their shows.
