Default Bob Costas, who said football “destroys people’s brains” in November, won’t be part o

...f NBC’s Super Bowl coverage

http://thebiglead.com/2018/01/22/bob...bowl-coverage/

Costas previously said that he expected to retain his hosting duties for the Super Bowl after Mike Tirico was named as his Olympics replacement, as The Big Lead points out. So The Big Lead says “there’s reason for skepticism” that Costas’ comments about football and its impact on players’ brains may have something to do with his omission from today’s NBC’s official Super Bowl broadcasting team announcement.

Bob Costas: “It wouldn’t be right for me to parachute in and do the Super Bowl”
Amid speculation that Costas was dumped from NBC’s Super Bowl coverage over his November comments on concussions, NBC explained that Liam McHugh is being used instead because he was actually a part of the NFL pregame/studio shows this past season. Costas, for his part, said he understood the decision: “Dan (Patrick) and Liam have done the job hosting NBC's NFL coverage all season. It wouldn't be right for me to parachute in and do the Super Bowl.” ALSO: Why else would NBC bump a “big-name veteran” over a “lower-profile employee”?

Bob Costas says skipping the Super Bowl was a “mutually agreeable” decision
Of his omission from NBC's Super Bowl coverage, Costas told The Daily: “The decision was mutually agreeable, and not only do I not have a problem with it, I am actually happy about it... I have long had ambivalent feelings about football, so at this point, it’s better to leave the hosting to those who are more enthusiastic about it.” Costas noted that he has been pointing out the NFL’s connection to brain trauma on NBC for years. “So the idea that I am only now finding my voice on this, or that NBC was taken aback by what I said (about concussions) at Maryland is just wrong. It’s all simple and straightforward,” he said.
