Jerry Van Dyke -- the famed younger brother of Dick Van Dyke -- has died ... TMZ has learned. Jerry's wife, Shirley, tells us ... he died Friday afternoon at their Arkansas ranch with her by his side. She says they were involved in a car accident over 2 years ago ... and Jerry's health had deteriorated since. We're told Dick visited them at the ranch over the Christmas holiday. A beloved comedian just like his brother, Jerry pursued stand-up as a young man and performed at military bases around the world. He made his acting debut on "The Dick Van Dyke" show and followed that up with appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show" before becoming a regular on "The Judy Garland Show." Jerry's best known for his role on "Coach" ... where he earned 4 Emmy nominations playing Asst. Coach Luther Van Dam alongside Craig T. Nelson. He also had major roles on "Yes, Dear" and most recently, "The Middle." He's survived by his wife and 2 children. Jerry was 86. |

Oh no.
Such a funny man and it took him years to finally land on a hit show. R.I.P. Jerry.

Luther Van Dam is a classic character! He was so lovable and funny! Jerry Van Dyke was a great unsung comedian. He was first offered the role of Gilligan which he turned down and I think he could have played the part well.
RIP Jerry. You will be missed!

Van Dyke emerged from his older brother Dick Van Dyke’s shadow to earn four Emmy nominations for his role on the long-running ABC sitcom Coach. “Everybody talks about me making a comeback,” he told Entertainment Tonight in 1990, one year after Coach premiered. “I say: ‘Comeback from what? This is as good as it’s ever been.’” Van Dyke also played his brother’s brother on a two-part episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show. In recent years, Van Dyke appeared on eight episodes of The Middle, playing the father of Patricia Heaton’s character. “I am incredibly sad to hear of Jerry’s passing,” said Coach star Craig T. Nelson. “He was such a brilliant comedian and we had a great time working together on Coach. It is just devastating news.” Heaton tweeted: “Jerry, you were hilarious and terrifically talented - what an honor to be able to watch up close as you and your brother create your special magic.” And The Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss noted that he had “the pleasure of working with him on my very first TV show back in ‘93. What a kind man…” |

I had always associated Jerry Van Dyke as the spokesman for Big Lots and every time I would see Jerry Van Dyke in the commercials for Big Lots my nickname for Jerry Van Dyke was The Big Lots Guy and now i'm surprised that Jerry Van Dyke is now gone because he was so cool and not to mention really funny too. I wonder now that Jerry Van Dyke is gone if Big Lots will show the famous Big Lots commercial that starred Jerry Van Dyke with Yvette Nicole Brown?

Jerry Van Dyke was a favorite of mine -- from his appearances on the Dick Van Dyke Show to Coach to The Middle -- he was the best!
My sympathy to his family and friends. |
