Default The real reason behind The Big Bang Theory's ratings drop

http://www.nickiswift.com/102976/rea...-ratings-drop/

Quote:
After more than a decade as a CBS primetime stronghold—and as an always-on staple on cable and local networks—The Big Bang Theory remains one of the most popular shows on the air. However, less and less people (particularly those in the sought after 18 to 49 demographic) are regularly tuning in to see what Sheldon, Leonard, Penny, Howard, Raj, Bernadette, and the rest of the Pasadena genius crew get up to each week. So how come Big Bang isn't popping the way it used to?

The show has become stale. It began to lose its energy during Season 9.

It's also probably more popular and convenient to watch in syndication. I know so many people that would rather watch repeats every night than work their way through a show they've never seen.

Niles: God is forgiving, Miss Fine. When I was a boy, I once took five shillings out of the collection plate at church for toffee.
Fran: And nothing happened to you, right?
Niles: That's right, absolutely nothing. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go wash other peoples' underwear.

Interesting video . I think you covered almost everything .

The demographic sought after tends to follow the crowd and they demand more than just average entertainment .

The longest running shows are soap operas and there has to be more of that kind of content in a sitcom for it to retain viewership . That would be the very thing that comedy writers would shy away from .

Was Friends the longest running sitcom?

The ratings this season are doing pretty much what I expected they would-hold together okay for the first part of the season but begin to really crater due to it's age around mind season. That's exactly what's happening. I think the cratering will progress more by the Season finale in May. I suspect next season will be its last. It's not a bad thing, Big Bang has had a very long and mostly incredibly healthy life ratings wise. I've said before it's basically the equivalent of an old person at the end of their life at this point. I think another thing I've said on here before is especially true for this show and that is when a show gets old enough it just gets to the point where it's naturally ready to go peacefully. I think BBT is just a short time away from that and it's earned that rest. Many other long running sitcoms have reached that point too. I'll for sure catch these last few seasons once the Series run likely ends next year.

I still watch the syndicated reruns every night. It's good comfort food, even though I'm not too high on the current-run episodes.

All long-running shows hit a creative wall eventually, and they reach a certain saturation point once they go into continuous syndication. The ratings slip is just the natural process that all successful sitcoms reach.

I have not really watched the show in several seasons. I do sometimes watch a newer episode and I know what is happening broadly with the characters.

To me the characters have "grown up" and has come full circle from what the show was about, four awkward nerdy young men and their quirks and difficulties in the outside world and relationships. They have achieved what we the viewer wanted them to achieve.

Leonard and Penny are married. Sheldon (sorry, Sheldon is not heterosexual) is marrying his girlfriend. Wolowitz and wife are going to have a second child. Truthipali (sic) seems to be the only one trying to have a stable relationship, but even he has no problem talking to and dating attractive women.

The characters are older now also. Sheldon the character now is 38 years old (per Young Sheldon is he were nine years old in 1989), so we should think Leonard is about the same age.
