Default Viacom's cable networks are cutting down on scripted programming

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/li...ebrand-1059732

CMT will be done with scripted TV after Nashville and TV Land is pressing pause while the upcoming Paramount Network is being built up as a premium drama outlet.

This is good news because all of their scripted, original stuff was pure crap.

How about when the article mentions how they are niche channels? They haven't been niche channels in years. THAT'S the problem.

The only TV shows I pay for are the ones I purchase on home video.

As long as Paramount doesn't cancel Lyp Sync Battle it's all good with me. There's more variety of classic tv than there was during the glory days of Nick @ Nite and TV Land.

Fran: And nothing happened to you, right?
Niles: That's right, absolutely nothing. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go wash other peoples' underwear.

Logo has for all intent and purposes, become the defacto TV Land 2. On that end, from what I've heard, all focus - including original programming and the majority of the budget - will be placed on those channels and the others (TV Land, VH1, CMT, Logo, etc.) will be considered "non-essential" (their words). The programming on the second level channels will consist of off-network reruns and rebroadcasts of original programming from the main six networks.

By dropping "Nashville" which just debuted Season 6 to very good ratings by CMT standards, they may as well shut CMT down. It also shows on Hulu and by cutting back to 16 episodes per season ending the show is short-sighted. They should let Netflix have it, with the right new characters that show could continue easily.

Spike TV started out as “The First Network for Men,” but it departs without much of a legacy

From its birth in 2003 as the successor to TNN/The Nashville Network with the motto “The First Network for Men” to its “Get More Action” phase to its “fiery” departure on Wednesday, Spike TV never really found its identity. There were some standout programming like the Guy’s Choice Awards and The Joe Schmo Show — starring a pre-SNL Kristen Wiig. But Spike never lived up to its original “First Network for Men” mission. “Spike ends on Wednesday and will become the Paramount Network on Thursday,” says Darren Franich. “When you consider its (lack of) legacy, you have to remember that ‘manhood’ – as an identity self-aware enough for capitalism to sell – was in a strange place circa 2003. In the crosscurrents of the National Network becoming TNN and then Spike TV, Comedy Central had The Man Show, Maxim was popular enough to justify an ancillary publication so generic it was literally just Stuff, and a macho celebrity was fending off sexual harassment allegations while running for political office. There was an unsteady quality to all of this, like to be in on the joke you had to take it seriously. This is a cultural divot we’ve never properly repaired. And the original programming lineup for Spike TV shows a hazy mission already drifting. ” ALSO: Check out Spike TV’s mock goodbye Twitter rant.
