Scott Brunton had just gone through a bad breakup when actor George Takei offered to take him out on the town.

It was the summer of 1981, and Takei, then 44, was well-known for his role as Lt. Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek. The two men knew each other socially. “It was a very hard breakup for me, and he said, ‘Well, let me take you out to dinner and the theater and we will talk,’ said Brunton, who was 23 at the time. “And I thought, ‘OK, that would be nice.’”

The two men — who hadn’t spent time together one-on-one before — spent the evening out before returning to Takei’s Los Angeles condo for a cocktail, Brunton said. Takei prepared a drink in the kitchen and brought it out to Brunton, who was in the living room. Brunton recalled that Takei served it in a Star Trek glass, which he found “a bit cheesy.”

When the Star Trek icon sat in on The Howard Stern Show on Oct. 16 in wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, the actor said “um” when Stern asked Takei if he had ever “grabbed somebody by their c*ck against their will." Takei had the same reaction when asked if he had ever sexually harassed somebody. But Takei insisted it was never about sexual harassment, or lording a job over someone. However, tonight a former model and actor, Scott R. Brunton, is accusing Takei of sexual harassment in 1981. "This happened a long time ago, but I have never forgotten it," Brunton tells The Hollywood Reporter. "It is one of those stories you tell with a group of people when people are recounting bizarre instances in their lives, this always comes up. I have been telling it for years, but I am suddenly very nervous telling it."

George Takei apologizes for joking to Howard Stern about “touching men,” says he was playing a “naughty gay grandpa”

The Star Trek icon, who has been sitting in on the Stern show for a few days a year since 2006, is sorry that his Oct. 16 comments about touching men without permission were misconstrued following last week's groping allegation. Takei explains on Facebook that he was actually joking. “For decades,” Takei writes, “I have played the part of a ‘naughty gay grandpa’ when I visit Howard’s show, a caricature I now regret. But I want to be clear: I have never forced myself upon someone during a date. Sometimes my dates were the initiators, and sometimes I was. It was always by mutual consent. I see now that that it has come across poorly in the awkward sketch, and I apologize for playing along with Howard’s insinuation.”

Slate, Upworthy, GOOD, Futurism, Refinery29 and Mic have been paying an influencer network that includes Takei to share their articles on social media in exchange for a commission. As of Tuesday, those six publications had cut ties with Takei.
