Struggling young rapper Courtney Rose, tired of waiting for opportunity, cooks up the publicity stunt of the century: Running for mayor of his hometown in California to generate buzz for his music career. Unfortunately for Courtney, his master plan goes wildly awry, ending in the most terrifying of outcomes: An election victory. With the help of his mother and friends, Courtney will have to overcome his hubris if he wants to transform the struggling city he loves.

ABC’s latest series The Mayor follows an all-too familiar plot for people on both political sides. A political novice runs for office to self-promote his image. However, once he connects to the heart of what voters want in contrast to phony candidates, he unexpectedly comes away with a victory. With a worthwhile plot that balances decent humor with heart, it just goes to show that even liberals can come to accept the Trump scenario. That is, if the scenario comes through a black man.

The ABC comedy “manages to simultaneously serve as a commentary on Donald Trump and, at least in its pilot, which airs Tuesday night, not engage with actual current events at all,” says Jen Chaney. The Mayor, she adds, “is certainly showing us what it looks like when a person seeks office for selfish reasons and then has to figure out how to lead without experience, or a plan, or even a clue. But it’s also showing us what it looks like when that person happens to be a black man who knows what it means to be an average person with real struggles.”
