HBO Renews "The Deuce" for 3rd and Final Season
"The Deuce" Renewed for Season 2 at HBO
by Denise Petski September 19, 2017 Just days after its series premiere, HBO has renewed its praised drama series "The Deuce" for a second season. Created by George Pelecanos and David Simon and starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, the show chronicles the rise of the porn culture in New York from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s. Titled after the local slang for the city’s fabled 42nd Street, "The Deuce" explores the rough-and-tumble world of the sex trade from the moment when both a liberalizing cultural revolution in American sexuality and new legal definitions of obscenity created a billion-dollar industry that is now an elemental component of the American cultural landscape. It follows a cast of barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police and nightlife denizens as they swirl through a world of sex, crime, high times and violence and the porn business begins its climb from mafia-backed massage parlors and film labs to legitimacy and cultural permanence. “We are thrilled to continue our creative collaboration with master storytellers David Simon and George Pelecanos,” said Casey Bloys, president HBO programming. “Their unique gift for immersing the audience in their dark and edgy worlds brings a brilliant verisimilitude unlike any other. With the remarkably talented Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco leading an exceptional cast, we look forward to delving deeper as this captivating story evolves.” Said Simon: “Everyone involved with this project is genuinely grateful to HBO for the chance to take the narrative where it needs to go. We knew the theme and purpose of the story, but there are many people in the entertainment industry who might not have it told — or worse, would have told it for the wrong reasons. HBO is a serious outfit. And they don’t scare.” Added Pelecanos: “Many thanks to HBO, our longtime partners, who’ve now given us the opportunity to continue to tell this compelling story. We’re ready to get back to work with our amazing cast and crew.” http://deadline.com/2017/09/the-deuc...bo-1202173112/ |

James Franco is conspicuously missing from HBO's The Deuce premiere date announcement
HBO tweeted the first promo pic of Season 2, announcing that the 1970s-set David Simon New York City porn drama will return on Sept. 9. But Franco, who was accused of sexual misconduct earlier this year, is nowhere to be found in the image accompanying the announcement. Instead, the promo shows Maggie Gyllenhaal. According to TVLine, "HBO declined to comment, but a source for the cabler tells TVLine that the image accompanying the announcement is merely one of several Season 2 photos set to be released. The insider also stressed that the picture is not the official key art." |

Maggie Gyllenhaal: "The Deuce" Should Not be Shut Down over James Franco Misconduct Allegations
by Greg Evans October 10, 2018 Maggie Gyllenhaal, a producer and star of "The Deuce", HBO’s gritty dramatic examination of misogyny, sexual violence and exploitation in the grimy Times Square of the 1970s, says shutting down the show in response to misconduct allegations against co-star James Franco would be “the opposite of the right thing to do.” "The Deuce", Gyllenhaal told SiriusXM radio host Sway Calloway yesterday, is “about transactional sex. It’s about inequality in the entertainment business. You couldn’t be more at the center of that conversation than The Deuce.” Gyllenhaal was not specifically addressing charges made by actress Busy Philipps about being thrown to the ground by Franco after she gently punched him in the chest, as directed, on the set of the 1999-2000 series "Freaks & Geeks". After Calloway mentioned the allegation, Gyllenhaal said that sexual misconduct allegations made against Franco earlier this year prompted her, as a "Deuce" producer, to speak with other female cast and crew about their experiences with star and exec producer Franco. “We, at the time that the accusations against James came out in the LA Times, we read them all, we took them very seriously,” Gyllenhaal said. “We spoke to every woman on the crew and in the cast to find out if they felt respected and what their experience of working with James was and everyone said that they had been totally respected by him.” Added Gyllenhaal about the show’s storyline and message, “To me, I thought I want to keep telling this story, I want to keep playing Candy and going deep into, like, really what it’s like from a woman’s perspective to be dealing with all the stuff that is on everybody’s minds right now. I think I would have been so sorry not to be able to keep doing that and also not to be able to watch Emily Meade, who plays Lori, keep doing that and to watch Dominique [Fishback], who plays Darlene, keep doing it and to watch all of these women who are creating these incredible characters that are taking it on straight on. I feel like it would’ve been the wrong consequence to those accusations to shut our show down. It would’ve been, like, the opposite of the right thing to do. And yet I believe that there should be consequences for disrespecting or assaulting women. Of course I do.” https://deadline.com/2018/10/maggie-...ns-1202480011/ |

Production and art director Scott Dougan says inactive Flickr accounts and New York Public Library's archives proved crucial in bringing back the 1980s Times Square. ALSO: David Simon and Emily Meade discuss The Deuce prostitute-turned-porn-star Lori Madison. |
