They played husband and wife on the hit 80s and 90s sitcom, Growing Pains.

But TV's favorite mom Joanna Kerns, 64, has revealed to People magazine she underwent a secret double mastectomy just one week before the sudden death of her friend and on-screen partner Alan Thicke, who died age 69 in December 2016.

The actress, best known for her role as Maggie Seaver on the ratings smash, talked about her difficulty in coping with the loss of the actor amidst the stress of having only just endured her own health battle.

Since undergoing the double mastectomy, the Pretty Little Liars director has thankfully been 'given an all-clear, the best results I could have had'.

But it didn't alleviate the pain she felt when her friend and co-star Thicke died of a 'type-A aortic dissection' in December 2016.

She explained: 'It was just a very, very hard time. I did go to the memorial four weeks out, and I was very happy to see my whole cast and my producers and dear friends.'
