TV ABC Cancels "Downward Dog"

"Downward Dog" Sent to the Dog House at ABC
by Lindsay Macdonald
June 23, 2017

Talking animals are usually an instant recipe for success, but it turns out that's not the case with ABC's "Downward Dog".

Co-Creator Samm Hodges posted a note on Twitter today (June 23rd) that the network has chosen not to move forward with Season 2 of the show.

Quote:
Well, ****. Got the very surprising news that ABC is not moving forward with Downward Dog. They loved it creatively and really wanted to make more, but couldn't find a financial path to do so. That's not a bull**** PR statement, that's true, and we are deeply personally thankful to them for putting this first season on the air and allowing us to make something really unique and uncompromising.

Obviously this is a hard moment, but we're not done. The crazy amazing love the fans have shown for DD combined with the critical response make us confident that there is a future and we are committed to finding a new home.

ABC is airing the last two episodes of season one on Tuesday at 10/9 central. Watch and show the world how much you care! Thanks for the love and support.

such a depressing show, I wanted to like it but it just wasn't watchable.

No surprise the cancellation is due to financial problems.

Give us a chance to argue in favor of #DownwardDog, and why it deserved to live a longer life

It didn't really seem like a comedy, not many laugh out loud moments. The dog was kind of interesting, especially when he was worrying about what the neighborhood cat was up to.

Tends to be a dog's life for shows that don't run with the pack [sorry, Martin]. "DD" had problems, but deserved a chance to be fixed [very sorry, Martin]. For starters, a better voice for Martin [not sorry, Hodges].

Downward Dog, a weirdly lovely show about a talking dog, belongs on TV — just not ABC
