TV Netflix Renews "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" for 4th Season

"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" Renewed for Season 4
by Sadie Gennis
June 13, 2017

Is Yuko trying to take over the world? It looks like we'll soon find out since Netflix ordered a fourth season of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt", TVGuide.com has learned.

"Kimmy Schmidt's" third season, which dropped in May, left fans questioning what's next for many of their favorite characters. The finale saw newly single Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) embarking on a career as a talent agent, Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) landing a huge job at a start-up and Titus' (Tituss Burgess) romantic gesture to win Mikey (Mike Carlsen) failing -- at least for now.

Oh, and let's not forget Kimmy is still married to the Reverend (Jon Hamm) in order to block Wendy (Laura Dern) from marrying him. Needless to say, there's still a whole lot left to explore in the world Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have built (and more Laura Dern and Daveed Diggs to see!) in Season 4.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's fourth season tries to stay upbeat in an increasingly bleak world
"The tone is still aggressively upbeat; Kimmy is smiling again," says Sophia Gilbert. "But Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt knows what time it is. There are a handful of awkward Trump jokes and typical gentrification gags before the show eases into gear, skewering the reality of the workplace for women while satirizing the pop-culture fantasy of the workplace for women. Kimmy, discovering how to stream television shows, binge-watches a series called Gals on the Town about 40-something women juggling love, work, and friendship, and becomes convinced she’s supposed to spend her Sundays brunching and getting her nails done. She also finds herself facing a sexual-harassment complaint, after her attempts to fire a male developer in a gentle 'Kimmy' kind of way backfire disastrously."

Inside Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's #MeToo-inspired sexual harassment storyline
"That stuff was blowing up and continuing to blow up and it felt like stuff that intersected with the stuff that we've talked about on the show a lot," says co-creator Robert Carlock of the #MeToo movement. "And our characters, Kimmy especially, would have a strong point of view on it."
