TV ABC Renews "Grey's Anatomy" Firefighter Spin-off "Station 19" for 2nd Season

ABC Orders "Grey's Anatomy" Spin-off about Firefighters
by Megan Vick
May 16, 2017

ABC announced on Tuesday that it has ordered a "Grey's Anatomy" spin-off straight to series that will focus on the working and personal lives of firefighters.

It is expected to debut during the 2017-18 season.

"No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey's signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spin-off," said ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey during the network's Upfronts presentation in New York City.

"Grey's" showrunner Stacy McKee will run the new series with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers signed on to executive produce with her.

The official log line for the series reads:

Set in a Seattle firehouse, the latest series from Shondaland follows a group of heroic firefighters. From the captain to the newest recruit, we follow these brave men and women as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock.

It worked for Chicago Fire, and all it's spin-offs. It will be interesting to see who the cast will be for the new show and if they'll name it Seattle Fire or go with something else.

Jaina Lee Ortiz To Star in ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" Spin-off
by Nellie Andreeva
July 26, 2017

Coming off a two-season stint as the female lead of Fox’s crime drama series "Rosewood", Jaina Lee Ortiz has been tapped for a starring role — believed to be a female lead — in ABC’s upcoming "Grey’s Anatomy" spin-off series.

The 10-episode drama, which follows a group of heroic firefighters, hails from "Grey’s Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland.

Set in a Seattle firehouse, the spin-off, slated for a midseason launch, is being written by "Grey’s" executive producer/co-showrunner Stacy McKee. From the captain to the newest recruit, the show revolves around the brave men and women who risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock.

The lead characters are expected to be introduced in an episode of "Grey‘s Anatomy" this fall before the offshoot series launches mid-season.

"Grey's Anatomy" Spin-off Gets Premiere Date (Yet Still has no Title)
by James Hibberd
Jan. 8, 2018

ABC’s spin-off of "Grey’s Anatomy" now has a premiere date. The firefighter-based show will have a two-hour premiere at 8pm on Thursday, March 22, and then will shift to its regular 9pm slot.

ABC executives admitted to reporters on Monday they’ve been a bit flummoxed figuring out the show's title — and one reason is NBC’s fire-fighter ensemble "Chicago Fire".

The truth of the matter is coming up with a title is one of the most challenging things we do,” ABC president Channing Dungey said. “We’ve gone through a number of different options and ideas. We want to make sure what we stick on it is the perfect piece.

She noted that because it’s unofficially called the “Grey’s Anatomy spin-off,” it makes it a little easier to wait until the last minute since that description alone has name recognition.

One reporter asked if "Chicago Fire" was the reason Shondaland’s latest drama wasn’t called "Seattle Fire" and Dungey confirmed that was indeed correct. “That would be the main reason we’re not going to call it Seattle Fire,” she said.

This all should be figured out soon, she added.

We would like to know in the next couple weeks,” Dungey said. “We have a few final ideas that we’re rolling around.

Why ABC hasn’t come up with a title for its Grey’s Anatomy firefighters spinoff
“Coming up with a title is one of the most challenging things we do,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said at the TV press tour, pointing out that Grey’s Anatomy’s name was settled on “right before air.” Dungey said she didn’t want to announce a name today, then change it in a few weeks.
