Default ABC Cancels Last Man Standing After 6 Seasons

Quote:
It was considered the perfect sitcom for the Trump era, hitting ratings highs in its sixth season. But that didn’t save Last Man Standing from a cancelation.

This is sort of a surprise given the ratings...and another good example of how fragile show's future's are when they are not airing on their studio sibling network. If this show was coming out of ABC Studios, it would have easily been renewed.

On second thought however, it actually isn't too surprising in that the last few episodes seemed to be wrapping the lives of the characters. The youngest is going away to college, the middle is going away with her husband, and the oldest is more settled with her husband and growing son.

I see what you mean. Networks typically profit more from shows they own than from shows they don't own, so they tend to be partial to the former. I'm not saying it as criticism toward the networks or anyone else; it's just a fact.

I have only casually seen Last Man Standing, but judging from what you said, it seems to me that what happened with the characters during the final episodes made the sixth season work as a final season. In which case, I see it as a consolation for not getting an official series finale.

Actually according to his Twitter page, another film is being done, but it doesn't take forever to make one. I wonder if CMT could keep LMS going. They already show the earlier episodes and it wouldn’t be the first time they picked up an ABC show, Nashville being their first. I actually saw it suggested at another website that Tim Allen should take over for the guy who was recently fired at the FBI.

God bless you and Tim and everyone else of the show always!!!

Yeah, any reality competition that takes up two hours a week or runs for two nights a week is going to take up so much of the ABC Network's schedule that ABC Network is going to cancel, like, half of its scripted shows. Turns out that ABC really does stand for Add Bull Crap.

From what I've just gathered, CMT can barely afford Nashville, even with a smaller order and cuts in the production budget. Therefore, it's perhaps unlikely that they would be able to cover the cost of a show like LMS, especially with the kind of salary Tim Allen can demand.

Let's also put it this way, if ABC was footing the bill and not making any money off of it, then there’s no real economic reason for them to continue. I'm guessing that at the end of day, LMS was a show that skewed older (i.e. outside of the desirable 18 to 34 demographic) or those who actually share Mike Baxter/Tim Allen's apparent world view.

ABC Defends Canceling "Last Man Standing"
by James Hibberd
May 16, 2017

ABC is breaking its silence on its decision to cancel "Last Man Standing".

The axing of Tim Allen’s sitcom which delivered about 8 million viewers on Friday nights has upset fans — particularly conservative viewers who feel the show’s Republican star was singled out.

ABC entertainment president Channing Dungey defended her decision to reporters on a conference call Tuesday, noting she also canceled shows with decidedly more progressive politics this year like producer John Ridley’s acclaimed drama "American Crime" and columnist Dan Savage’s comedy "The Real O’Neals".

A large part of these jobs are managing failure and we’ve made the tough calls and canceled shows that we’d otherwise love to stay on the air,” Dungey said.

That’s the job. I canceled Last Man Standing for the same business and scheduling reasons that I canceled Dr. Ken, The Real O’Neals, The Catch and American Crime. And Last Man Standing was a challenging one for me because it was a steady performer in the ratings, but once we made the decision not to continue with comedies on Fridays, that was where we landed.

LOl so they canceled shows that were liberal? Of course they did. Most of them are so they had to cancel some of them. Otherwise they wouldn't cancel anything. Lame excuse. And the ones they canceled had awful ratings. LMS was still doing well for a Friday night show.

From a ratings perspective the show performed well for ABC. What most viewers don’t know is that ABC would have had to enter into a new production contract with 20th (who makes the show). In the new contract ABC would have likely been on the hook for some production costs. 20th had being paying those costs in the original contract. ABC opted to cancel it rather than incur the new costs. At least that is their official argument.

I don’t necessarily think it was directly cancelled due to Tim Allen’s comments on Jimmy Kimmel's show. I do however think that ABC sees the anti-conservative mood of the country created by the Trump administration and that they decided they no longer wanted to be in the Last Man Standing business. The deal with the production contracts is a convenient excuse, but it is also a norm in the industry.
