‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Co-Creator Dan Goor On That Hilarious Gina Reveal

Brooklyn Nine-Nine finally returned after a three month hiatus, which left fans wondering whether or not Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti) survived being hit by a bus in a surprisingly violent but weirdly hilarious cliffhanger. Well, if you’ve watched tonight’s episode, “The Audit,” you know that while she suffered a number of broken bones and internal injuries, the diva of the Nine-Nine still lives.

Many wondered if Peretti’s pregnancy would leave her sidelined or off the show (hence the accident), but co-creator and writer Dan Goor told us that this plot twist was really just the means to a hilarious visual gag.

“So the truthful answer is that I thought it would be really funny to see Gina in a medical halo. Working backwards from there, we also thought it would be funny to have Gina get hit by a bus. They just seemed like funny ideas. And then when we found out that we were going to be taking a midseason hiatus, we thought it would be a good time to play that card because obviously it makes for a good cliff hanger.”

Even Goor was slightly taken aback by the unexpected accident when he first saw the footage, which caught a lot of people off-guard. However, fans never should have worried, as Gina is the pinnacle of human evolution and is therefore unkillable.

“I didn’t expect when we first started that the bus crashing into the dummy of Gina to look quite as violent as it did. When I first saw it in the editing room, I laughed really hard and my jaw just dropped. But, it should be pointed out that Gina is more than a human being; she’s an ethereal spirit. She’s a concept, and you can’t kill a concept. If she he wanted to be president, she would be in 15 minutes.”
