Question Actors who phone it in

Are there any actors or actresses who you think suck in every role? In other words, those who add nothing to the show, and practically any other actor/actress could play that part.

Brian Keith on Family Affair. Phoning it in would be an effort for him.

David Ogden Stiers who was Major Charles Winchester on M.A.S.H. Besides the role of Winchester, I haven't liked him in anything else I've seen him in. With the exception of a guest starring role in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation in which he was all right, not great but not terrible either. I really can't explain it but something about his personality just rubs me the wrong way. I don't even particularly like the sound of his voice.

I think he was on one of those sweet deals like Fred McMurray had on My 3 Sons. Brian Keith always seemed to be just reading his lines or showing how little he really cared. I remember thinking as a kid that Uncle Bill seemed bored.

Matthew Perry in any comedic role post Friends. He seems on auto pilot in any sitcoms now, though he really dived in when given a dramatic role on The Good Wife.

As much as I loved All in the Family, I always thought that the entire cast of Archie Bunker's Place seemed to be phoning it in. I have never seen a more low energy sitcom before or since.

I liked ABP (as you can tell by my current avatar), but as far as your "low energy" comment, I think you're spot on. It seemed like it was slowed down in post production. Unlike a lot of shows that are actually sped up to make time constraints. I actually noticed this when watching as a kid. Weird.

He's painful to watch on The New Odd Couple reboot on CBS. Definition of phoning it in.

In an earlier post, someone mentioned My Three Sons. The other actors always had to do 99 percent of their scenes with Fred MacMurray with a stand in, since Fred came in and read all his stuff once. Then the actors would have to come back and do establishing shots with him, then he left...what a pain all this must have been for the other actors. I think there were some exceptions where MacMurray was heavily involved (like in the thread that opened the tenth season, leading up to Steve and Barbara's marriage).
