TV NBC Renews "Ellen's Game of Games" for 4th Season

Ellen DeGeneres To Host NBC Game Show Series Based on Games from her Talk Show
by Nellie Andreeva
March 2, 2017

Ellen DeDeneres is taking a popular element of her daytime talk show to primetime. NBC has given a six-episode order to "Ellen’s Game of Games", a game show hosted and executive produced by DeGeneres via Warner Bros. where her company A Very Good Production is based.

The hour-long game show will feature supersized versions of the most popular fun games from "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" with contestants pulled from the audience. At the end of each episode, DeGeneres will give someone a chance at a huge cash prize.

Games have been a fixture on "Ellen" with an extensive roster of formats that has included Cut the Cord, Know Or Go, The Marshmallow Game, The Sweater Game, Pieface and Funglish.

I’m so excited to be hosting a huge primetime game show for NBC,” said DeGeneres. “We’re pulling out all the stops — gigantic sets, hilarious games. It’s going to be like a combination of American Ninja Warrior, RuPaul’s Drag Race and a water park. OK, it’s nothing like that, but you should still watch.

Ellen’s impact as a daytime icon is unprecedented and we can’t wait to see her bring that amazing spirit to Game of Games,” said Paul Telegdy, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment.

Since establishing Warner Alternative Television over three years ago, some of our greatest successes have come from working with Ellen and her incredibly talented team,” said Mike Darnell, President, Warner Bros. Unscripted and Alternative Television. “But the dream has always been to get Ellen herself to say yes to hosting a primetime show. Now that she finally has, I am more than ecstatic. We’ve married a great concept to the best host in the business!

"Ellen's Game of Games" expands DeGeneres’ relationship with NBCUniversal. Her talk show is one of the most important syndicated programs on the NBC stations.

And at the broadcast network, DeGeneres executive produces the successful Steve Harvey-hosted reality series "Little Big Shots", recently announced spin-off "Little Big Shots: Forever Young" and the upcoming Drew Barrymore-hosted "First Dates".

"Ellen", as well as all of DeGeneres’ series, are produced by various divisions Warner Bros., which has been her home for well over a decade. "Ellen’s Game of Games" is the first show besides her talker that she has hosted.

I love Ellen DeGeneres and I think NBC really has a terrific idea to turn a very popular segment on her talk show into a game show form. And when Ellen's Game Of Games debuts on NBC I think it will be an excellent show to add to Ellen's impressive resume. There's lots to love about Ellen DeGeneres and this show will be a hit with Ellen's fans everywhere

During the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade yesterday the first ever commercial for Ellen's Game Of Games aired on NBC. From what I saw of the preview Ellen's Game Of Games seems to have gotten inspiration from Nickelodeon's Double Dare and looks like it might be a surprise hit for NBC. Special preview episodes of Ellen's Game Of Games will debut sometime in December

"Ellen’s Game of Games" Renewed For Season 3 at NBC
by Denise Petski
January 16, 2019

Just a week in to Season 2, NBC has renewed top-rated alternative series "Ellen’s Game of Games" for a third season. No word yet on the number of episodes.

The renewal for the Ellen DeGeneres-hosted game show comes amid strong ratings.

"Ellen’s Game of Games" returned to the NBC schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 8 as the night’s No. 1 entertainment program in the key adult 18-49 demo. Its 1.5 rating won the 8 PM ET hour over CBS’ NCIS and ABC’s comedy duo of "The Conners" and "The Kids Are Alright".

In L+3, the premiere grew by 18% in 18-49 to 1.80 and +821,000 viewers overall to 7.4 million. This week’s telecast increased its timeslot lead while growing by 13% week to week in 18-49 to a 1.7 rating.

The series also ranked as the #1 new alternative show of the 2017-18 season in 18-49 and total viewers.

We are delighted that America has wholeheartedly embraced this wildly entertaining and unpredictable show,” said Meredith Ahr, President, Alternative and Reality Group, NBC Entertainment.

Ellen’s signature humor, coupled with the clever twists she and the producers bring to each hilarious moment, puts ‘Game of Games’ in a league of its own. We can’t wait to get started on season three.

Ellen's Game of Games reveals that Ellen DeGeneres is "kinda mean"

Although Ellen is very funny, there is something about her that comes off a little mean, says Joe MacLeod. "The shtick she does on her talk show, where she gets the guests and the audience members to dance, exudes an undercurrent of anger and manipulation, leveraging Ellen’s branded passive-aggressive performance persona of aw-shucks awkwardness and twisting it into a projectile aimed at compelling others on the show to debase themselves," he says. "I’m not trying to psychoanalyze or anything, OK? It’s just a feeling I get about Ellen. I’m not saying she’s a bad person, but she’s kinda mean, that’s all, and her game show, Ellen’s Game of Games, which is somehow billed as a reality show, is all about Ellen being mean to people who are trying to win $100,000, so she gets to do all kinds of torturous things to them as they vie for the ultimate prize over the course of a series of colorfully designed, sadistically inventive preliminary games."

"Ellen’s Game of Games" Renewed for Season 4 at NBC
by Erik Pedersen
February 18, 2020

Let the games continue. NBC has handed a Season 4 renewal to "Ellen’s Game of Games", the hourlong series hosted by Ellen DeGeneres that ranked as primetime’s No. 1 game show last season.

The announcement — which comes six weeks into the series’ third season — was made during her talk show today, and the host had audience members play the messy “Danger Word” game to celebrate.

I’m so excited. I love this show so much,” DeGeneres said. “It makes me so happy. I love games. It combines all my favorite things: prizes and surprises. I’m sure you’ve seen it, but if you haven’t, you’ve been missing out.
