Default I Finally Completed Family Matters on DVD

I am now the proud owner of all nine seasons of Family Matters on DVD. The sad thing is I am so obsessive compulsive when it comes to certain things that even though I have all 215 episodes and I’m pretty sure most of the episodes are uncut and unaltered there’s ONE episode that was messed with and it bugs me. The first season episode “Rachel’s First Date” was a pre-Urkel episode and yet they have the syndicated cold open which includes Steve Urkel. In reruns there are three other episodes with Steve Urkel in them for episodes he was not originally a part of. So I’m glad they didn’t use all four in the DVD set but I’m still bothered by it. To the point that if they released a complete series box set and the only difference in content is that they’ve fixed that episode, I would buy it. That’s just how I am.

This show had some of the worst cover art I’ve seen that it’s comical. But like they say, “don’t judge a DVD by its cover art.”

Regardless, I’m still happy to own the whole series with all its flaws. Now maybe Warner Bros can focus on completing Perfect Strangers or starting up Chico and the Man or starting my other favorite TGIF sitcom Step by Step.

The season 2 episode "Ice Station Winslow" is the syndicated edit.

I'm also happy to FINALLY own all 9 seasons!

When they first started releasing TV DVDs, "FM" was on the top of my list for releases and now here it is YEARS later and it's finally happened.

Really hoping that "Perfect Strangers" is the next series to come from Warner Archive. Also hoping that Warner Archive finishes up "Alice" and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper".

Yeah, I guess I knew that too. And of course I would prefer the uncut version but I'm basically okay with it. But I just can't get over the "Rachel's First Date" blunder. The fun of the first 11 episodes is that they are 100 percent Urkel-free and to first time viewers, it won't make sense to them since he knows Carl in that cold open and then episodes later when it was actually Steve's first appearance, he's meeting Carl and the Winslows for the first time.

But... still glad to have all the episodes on DVD. This was never a top ten most wanted series for me but definitely in the top 100. That may not sound like a lot but I like A LOT of shows, lol. So making the top 100 is actually very good.

I just noticed another error. In the season four episode "Higher Anxiety", the DVD does not include the cold open. The cold open is the only appearance of Rachel in that episode so by taking it out, removes her from the episode altogether. I only know this because the episode is completely intact on the Amazon Instant Video version and I was able to compare them.

I remember when they first released season four and they had used all syndicated prints. That's why I didn't buy it right away. I waited for them to fix it. I had only ordered it from Amazon a couple of weeks ago, assuming I was getting the uncut version. Is there a chance I was given the syndicated one instead? Does anyone with the supposedly "uncut" DVD set know if this cold open is missing on your set? If not, then I'll buy it again and hope for the uncut release.

^Adam, my set came directly from WB when I requested a replacement set.

My set HAS the cold open with Rachel.

Looks like you got cheated.

Well it's good to know that a set WITH the cold open is available, even if it means I have to re-buy it.

It is weird how you have those syndicated cuts in the US. As far as I know, we only get the original versions over here in Sweden.

Now what is edited again? I haven't gotten it yet. It is in backorder from DeepDiscount. I ordered it from them because I was able to get it for $16 dollars. WBshop at $30 bucks was a bit too much and I got a big savings.

I'm still sort of confused as to actually what is missing/edited in the sets. But I've been enjoying them!

One big knock that I've heard about FM is that it has absolutely not aged well. I mean between, Urkel's annoying antics and overall corny nature of the show.

Which is only a matter of opinion. I have no problems with Steve's antics, except for that he never gave up on snooty Laura.

why do people hate Laura so much. She terrible in the beginning but her character eventually developed and she was better the last three seasons
