Dynasties That Never Were?

What are some of the great dynasties that never were? These could be teams that won one championship and never reached that achievement again. These could also be teams that always had a ton of hype at the start of the season but for one reason or another never met expectations.

The 1985 Chicago Bears were predicted to have a dynasty/Super Bowl run of several years, but it didn't happen. Coach Mike Ditka's 1985 Bears only played in that one Super Bowl, things gradually fell apart after that. Linebacker Wilber Marshall left and signed with the Redskins, defense coach Buddy Ryan left to become head coach for the Eagles. The Ditka era Bears continued to be a good team for a few years and won their division, but never returned to the Super Bowl.

Should have won it in '86 if Ditka wasn't so stuck on Flutie starting the Divisional Playoff against the Redskins. The loss of Willie Gault didn't help matters either. Took away the deep threat.

I remember the Doug Flutie experiment, I liked Flutie but his time with the Bears didn't work out too well. A few years ago I knew Jim McMahon, he was a customer at a bank I used to work for. Whenever I tried to talk to him about football, he would discuss it but I always had the feeling he'd rather talk about something else.

Yeah I bet McMahon didn't want to talk about it much saw him on that 30/30 special. He didn't look to good.

I think McMahon didn't like to discuss football much because he's not fond of his playing days in the NFL. In recent years, he's had to deal with head pain and headaches, leftover effects of concussions he suffered while playing in the NFL. He said if he could go back and do it again, he would have played baseball instead of football. I knew McMahon about 10 years ago, I don't know him anymore, at the time he seemed fairly healthy, so I imagine his headache problems got worse later on. If I recall he used to live in Northbrook, suburb north of Chicago. I don't know if he still lives there, he might have moved away. During the time I knew him, one thing he told me was that he hated the cold weather of Chicago winters, he wanted to move someplace where it's warmer. So maybe that's what he did.

That's odd because he played in mostly cold cities. Chicago, Philly, Minnesota, Cleveland and Green Bay. I would have stayed in San Diego or Arizona...

McMahon might have played in some cold weather cities, but he did not like the cold weather. At least that's what he told me. I don't blame him, I dislike cold weather too. Normal cold weather is tolerable, but the extreme below zero stuff is miserable.

Yeah I live 90 miles west of Chicago its cold and terrible here. Only 4 months to April..
